According to Voepass, the plane, en route from Cascavel (Parana state) to the international airport in Sao Paulo state, crashed in Vinhedo, about 80km northwest of Sao Paulo, at 1:30 p.m. on August 9th. Videos shared on social media show the ATR-72 aircraft losing control as it crashed behind a cluster of trees near residential areas, leaving a large plume of black smoke. Daniel de Lima, a resident of Vinhedo, said: “The plane spun but didn’t move forward. Immediately afterwards it crashed and exploded.” Authorities in the Valinhos area near Vinhedo said there were no survivors. An apartment in a local apartment building was damaged, but no residents were injured. Authorities have not yet released the cause of the crash. However, Guilherme Derrite, an official from the state of Sao Paulo, confirmed that the plane's black box had been found and appeared to be intact. Voepass, Brazil's fourth-largest airline (by market share), said it could not provide any further information about the cause of the crash. Initially, the airline reported 62 people on board. The Italian-French aircraft manufacturer ATR told Reuters that its experts were "fully involved" in the investigation into the accident and its passengers. This is the most serious aviation accident in Brazil since 199 people died in 2007 on a flight operated by TAM Airlines.
