Some people argue that since Decree 144/2020/ND-CP was issued, the licensing of beauty contests has become more "lenient," leading to the possibility of anyone registering to participate in beauty pageants or competitions.

In just two evenings, August 2nd and 3rd, Vietnam crowned five new Misses and over a dozen runners-up. Statistics show that we hold up to 60 beauty pageants annually, with hundreds, even thousands, of winners each year. Among them, many Misses, runners-up, and other beauty queens face accusations of buying titles or other controversies… Therefore, it's not surprising that many cultural experts believe beauty pageants have never been as chaotic as they are now, and the titles of these beauty queens have consequently lost their value.
The final night of the Miss Businesswoman Universe Vietnam 2024 competition, held in Binh Thuan on August 2nd, selected 3 winners and 5 runners-up.
Simultaneously, on the evening of August 3rd, two other beauty pageants took place: Miss Grand Vietnam 2024 and Miss Tourism Vietnam. Miss Grand Vietnam 2024 crowned one winner and four runners-up. The Miss Tourism pageant crowned one winner and two runners-up, in addition to several other special awards…
Thus, in just two nights, Vietnam has had 5 more Misses and dozens of runners-up and other beauties honored.
In 2024 alone, Vietnam already had five national-level beauty pageants: Miss Universe Vietnam; Miss Grand Vietnam; Miss Tourism Vietnam; Miss Tourism Vietnam Global; and Miss Vietnam National. That's not including countless regional beauty contests, too many to even remember.
Since the first national beauty pageant was held in 1988, two decades have passed, and the beauty queen crown has always been considered a prestigious symbol representing talented, beautiful, and virtuous Vietnamese women. Beauty pageants, held annually or biennially, are meaningful cultural activities that honor the beauty of Vietnamese women; therefore, they are always eagerly anticipated and leave a lasting impression on the public.
However, nowadays, with the countless beauty pageants and contests, the situation of "meeting a beauty queen everywhere" has made people feel overwhelmed and no longer enthusiastic about beauty contests. In particular, the commercialization of beauty contests not only erodes public trust but also diminishes the true value of the crowns.
Perhaps it's time we seriously reconsider and re-evaluate beauty pageants, so that these competitions truly become high-quality, anticipated cultural events that select and honor truly deserving individuals.
In reality, beauty pageants no longer receive much attention in developed countries, including those considered beauty powerhouses. Evidence of this is the limited number of beauty contests held in these countries. Conversely, developing countries are organizing them en masse, and the purposes of these competitions are becoming increasingly distorted.
Former Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Tien Tho once affirmed: Some beauty pageants are organized as a form of economic activity where organizers call on businesses and advertising companies to make money, without focusing on the quality of the competition. If abused, it will lead to unpredictable consequences.
Once beauty pageants are organized solely to meet the supply and demand dynamics, as some have argued, it's clear that the competition has been distorted and transformed into a commercial activity rather than a typical cultural event.
To restore the reputation and improve the quality of current beauty pageants, perhaps we need to tighten regulations. To reduce the proliferation of beauty queens and contestants, perhaps the authorities should have specific regulations for each competition, assigning responsibility to each specific organization... Only then can we hope that current beauty pageants will find truly deserving winners and beauties.
