In just 2 nights of August 2-3, Vietnam had 5 more beauty queens and more than a dozen runners-up. And according to statistics, we have up to 60 beauty contests held each year, the number of beauties honored each year is up to hundreds, even thousands. Among them, many beauty queens, runners-up, and honored beauties have encountered suspicions of buying awards or other scandals... Therefore, it is not natural that many cultural experts believe that beauty contests have never been as "chaotic" as they are now and the titles of beauties have also "lost value" because of that.

The final night of the Miss Universe Vietnam Businesswoman 2024 contest took place in Binh Thuan on the evening of August 2, selecting 3 beauty queens and 5 runners-up.

At the same time, on the evening of August 3, two other beauty contests took place: Miss Grand Vietnam 2024 and Miss Tourism Vietnam. Miss Grand Vietnam 2024 honored 01 Miss and 04 Runners-up. Miss Tourism honored 01 Miss and 02 Runners-up, in addition to many other secondary awards...

Thus, in just 2 nights, Vietnam had 5 more beauty queens and dozens of runners-up and beauties honored.

In 2024 alone, Vietnam currently has 5 national beauty contests including: Miss Universe Vietnam; Miss Grand Vietnam; Miss Vietnam Tourism; Miss Vietnam Global Tourism; Miss Vietnam National. Not to mention the countless regional beauty contests that are so numerous that it is difficult to remember.

Since the first national beauty pageant was held in 1988, two decades have passed, the beauty pageant crown has always been considered a noble symbol representing talented, beautiful and virtuous Vietnamese women. Beauty pageants held once a year or every two years are meaningful cultural activities to honor the beauty of Vietnamese women, so the pageants are always anticipated by everyone and leave a deep impression on the public.

However, nowadays, with the "countless" beauty pageants, the situation of "going out and meeting beauty queens" has made people seem "overfed" and no longer "passionate" about current beauty pageants. In particular, the commercialization of beauty pageants not only makes people lose trust but also makes the value of the crowns actually decrease.

Is it time for us to seriously consider and re-plan beauty contests, to make these beauty contests truly a highly anticipated and high-quality cultural event when selecting and honoring truly deserving faces?

In fact, beauty contests are no longer receiving much attention in developed countries, including beauty powerhouses. The evidence is that the number of beauty contests in these countries is very limited. On the contrary, developing countries are organizing them massively, and the purpose of the contests is becoming increasingly distorted.

Former Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Tien Tho once affirmed: Some beauty contests are organized as a form of economic activity when the organizers call on businesses and advertising companies to make money, not paying attention to the quality of the contest. If abused, it will lead to unpredictable consequences.

Once beauty contests are held just to satisfy the law of supply and demand as some people have stated, it is clear that the contest has been transformed and become a commercial activity rather than just a normal cultural activity.

To restore the brand as well as improve the quality of current beauty contests, should we tighten the beauty contests? To reduce the "chaos" of beauty queens and beauties, therefore, should the authorities have specific regulations for each contest, assigning responsibility to each specific unit... only then can we expect current beauty contests to find truly worthy beauty queens and beauties.
