Phu Lang Pottery Village, a 700-year-old famous pottery village in Kinh Bac, is located on the banks of the Cau River and has many ferry piers carrying passengers back and forth. The name Phu Lang dates back to the end of the Tran Dynasty and the beginning of the Le Dynasty. During this period, Phu Lang had 3 villages: Trung Thon, Thuong Thon, Ha Thon and was known for its traditional pottery craft.
The imprint of Phu Lang pottery throughout the Red River Delta is ceramic products related to beliefs such as dragons, phoenixes, cranes, incense burners, urns, altars, four sacred animals, and chimeras... on pagodas, communal houses, shrines, and temples... Please join Vietnam.vn to learn about the pottery village that is over 700 years old, through the photo series "Phu Lang Pottery Village" by author Nguyen Ngoc Van. The photo series was sent by the author to participate in the Photo and Video Contest "Happy Vietnam - Happy Vietnam", organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications. Phu Lang pottery has its own unique characteristics, which are brown, dark brown, light yellow, and brown yellow glazes, which are called eel skin glazes by those in the pottery profession. When taking the clay home, the craftsman must dry the clay until it loses its color, then mix it with several layers of soil, pound it into small balls the size of a thumb, and soak it in water. Next, he cross-shapes it, flattens it, selects stones, breaks it, and sands it until the clay is smooth. Before shaping, the clay must be cross-shapes 10 times before being put on the turntable. The outstanding feature of Phu Lang pottery village is that the villagers use the embossing method in the form of carving, also known as double carving, with natural and durable glaze color; the shape of the pottery is rustic but strong, and the sculptures create diverse shapes. Phu Lang ceramic materials are made from red-pink soil "bones" taken from Thong Vat and Cung Khiem regions (Bac Giang). Each finished ceramic product goes through many stages from spreading the clay, shaping, cutting, drying, firing, assembling... with the participation of many people. More than a decade ago, Phu Lang pottery village was at risk of disappearing. But now, with more than 200 kilns always burning, the craft village has revived. For potters, making a living from their craft is precious, so even though the work is hard, their love for the craft remains unchanged. To maintain and develop the craft village, many pottery production establishments have proactively linked with travel agencies to bring tourists, students, and pupils to the locality to visit and experience pottery making with artisans.
