On August 8, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee held a ceremony to commend and reward 474 excellent students, 95 excellent teachers, and teachers who trained the Ho Chi Minh City excellent student team.

Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that in the past year, Ho Chi Minh City has achieved excellent results in training excellent students.

According to the leader of the City Department of Education and Training, in the national high school excellent student exam for the 2023-2024 school year, 110/167 students participating in the exam won prizes (4 first prizes, 19 second prizes, 39 third prizes and 48 consolation prizes; in the 4 first prizes, there was 1 student who won the top prize in English). With the above achievements, Ho Chi Minh City broke out of the 12th position in the overall ranking of results of provinces and cities for the 2022-2023 school year, jumping more than 10 places, winning the 2nd position nationwide.

The national high school science and technology competition had 4 participating projects, all of which won prizes (1 project won first prize, 1 project won third prize and 2 projects won fourth prize). The first prize winning project was sent to participate in the international science and technology competition in the US and excellently won second prize and received an additional prize from the American Computer Association.

Regarding the city-level excellent student selection exam, 1,957 high school students won prizes (115 first prizes, 405 second prizes, 1,437 third prizes). 1,981 middle school students won prizes (72 first prizes, 480 second prizes, 1,429 third prizes).

With the science and technology competition, in the 2023-2024 school year, investment units will be clearer in the quality and quantity of projects, and students' research processes will be increasingly standardized...

However, the Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training acknowledged that the results of the national excellent student exam are still not consistent among subjects.

The teaching staff responsible for training gifted students in some units is still lacking, many subjects do not meet the requirements; many young teachers are assigned the task of training gifted students for the first time, so they lack teaching skills and experience... The conditions of facilities, equipment, learning materials, and investment funds for training gifted student teams are still limited.

Therefore, in the coming time, the Department of Education and Training will raise awareness of managers and teachers of educational institutions about the implementation of the training of gifted students, considering this a key task in implementing the tasks of the school year; encourage and motivate teachers who are good at their profession, love their job, and are dedicated to the training of gifted students; continue to innovate the content and methods of organizing gifted student competitions in the direction of early detection of gifted students to be proactive in selecting, reviewing, training, and coaching teams.

Specialized high schools and schools with specialized classes continue to enhance professional activities to improve the quality of staff and the quality of city-level, national-level and international gifted student competitions. In addition, the education sector enhances facilities, equipment and teaching aids to meet the requirements of innovative teaching methods; preferential policies and attraction in recruiting and using excellent teachers.

At the ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Le, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, said that the city is proud of the two students from Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted who won second prize in the international science and technology competition, 186 students who won national prizes and 286 students who won first prize in the city in the past school year. They are not only the pride of their families, but also the pride of the city and the country.

"These excellent results are achieved first of all thanks to the efforts of the students themselves, along with the dedicated guidance of the teachers, the care, attention, encouragement and motivation of the students' families, the support of the school and social organizations. In today's ceremony, we also congratulate the 27 teachers who won first prize in the city-level competition for excellent preschool teachers; 68 teachers who trained excellent students were awarded," Ms. Nguyen Thi Le emphasized.

The contributions and continuous efforts of teachers have contributed to building a strong educational foundation for children and the results of excellent students have proven the investment and dedication of teachers to the educational community.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Le, the above results have shown the effectiveness of the determination of the entire political system, including the focus on leadership and direction, the attention from the City Party Committee, the City People's Council, and the City People's Committee to the education sector, clearly demonstrated through strategic decisions on education development, including Resolution No. 02 of the People's Council on regulations on a number of policies to encourage teachers, students, and trainees to win prizes in city-level, national, regional, and international competitions, and teachers with achievements in training and fostering students and trainees who won prizes in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the ceremony, the Organizing Committee awarded certificates of merit from the Ministry of Education and Training to 111 students who had achieved excellent results. Of which, certificates of merit were awarded to 8 students who won first and second prizes in the national science and technology competition; certificates of merit were awarded to 103 students who won first, second and third prizes in the national high school competition for the 2023-2024 school year; and certificates of merit from the City People's Committee were awarded to 474 students and 95 teachers.
