Tuition fees for health-related fields: Expected to increase further.

TP - The leader of a university that trains students in health-related fields said that with the current tuition fees, universities are still struggling to train students and expect them to increase further in the future.

According to this leader, training a doctor or pharmacist is much more expensive than other professions. "Previously, in public universities, health-related fields were subsidized, resulting in low tuition fees. However, now that most universities are autonomous, tuition fees have to increase to meet training needs," this leader said. He also added that to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in pursuing medical studies, universities have increased scholarships.

In an interview with reporters regarding the rising cost of training medical personnel at universities, Mr. Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, stated that the increase in training costs is not a subjective factor but rather a result of the financial autonomy policies being implemented by the universities. Tuition fees for medical programs are actually higher than those for some other fields. "This is not unusual, as in many countries around the world, tuition fees for medical programs are also higher than other fields of study," Mr. Thuong explained.

According to Mr. Thuong, although tuition fees have increased, the medical field is still attractive to the community and students. In practice, financially autonomous universities still attract a large number of applicants. This shows that the desire to enter the medical field and dedicate themselves to it remains strong, and many families can still afford to send their children to study medicine.

To support remote and disadvantaged areas, the Ministry of Health is currently implementing a policy of maintaining on-site training. To support medical students during their training, the Ho Chi Minh City health sector is developing a project called "Young Talents in the Health Sector," which includes support schemes for resident doctors and those who have completed their 6-year training program and then take the residency exam. The Department of Health will submit this proposal to the Ho Chi Minh City leadership for consideration of a suitable mechanism to attract doctors.

Currently, the health sector is implementing a pilot program to send doctors to practice at general hospitals linked to health centers. In addition to gaining practical experience and engaging with the community, doctors will receive additional financial support during their training. This solution not only reduces the financial burden on newly graduated doctors but also contributes to improving the quality of human resources in the medical field.
