Professor Chu Pham Ngoc Son was born on April 10, 1936, in Saigon, with his ancestral home in Tien Lu, Hung Yen province. In 1954, he studied at the Saigon University of Science . After passing the PCB certificate in physics, chemistry, and biology and the SPCN certificate in physical, chemical, and natural sciences, in 1955, he applied to work in the university's chemistry lab as a laboratory technician, cleaning laboratory bottles and containers, sanitizing analytical balances and laboratory benches, and preparing and conducting some illustrative chemistry experiments while the professor lectured on theory.
In 1957, he earned a bachelor's degree in physics and chemistry and was retained as a lecturer at the Saigon University of Science while simultaneously preparing his master's thesis. In 1958, he earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics. In 1959, he successfully defended his master's thesis and was sent to study at the University of Delaware, USA. In 1962, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in organic physical chemistry.
Upon returning to Vietnam, he resumed his teaching career at the Saigon University of Science, gradually rising to the rank of full professor. After 1975, he remained in Vietnam, continuing his teaching work as a lecturer at the University of Ho Chi Minh City (the predecessor of the University of Science - Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City). In 1980, he was awarded the title of Professor by the State.
In 1987, he moved to become Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Analytical and Testing Services, concurrently serving as Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Scientific and Technical Associations. He worked there until his retirement in 2001.
After retirement, Professor Chu Pham Ngoc Son remained actively involved in teaching and social work. He held numerous positions in social organizations, including Vice President of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Ho Chi Minh City, Vice President of the Vietnam Chemical Society, Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Analytical Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Public Health Association, and President of the Ho Chi Minh City Chemical Society. He was also a member of the American Chemical Society.
Throughout his academic career, Professor Chu Pham Ngoc Son has published 200 scientific papers in specialized journals, with 5 of his works put into production, and has published numerous textbooks and monographs on general chemistry and chemical thermodynamics.
In addition to his outstanding achievements in the classroom and laboratory, Professor Chu Pham Ngoc Son has also made significant contributions to the country and Ho Chi Minh City in his capacity as a Member of Parliament for three terms, Vice President of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Ho Chi Minh City, and President of the Ho Chi Minh City Chemistry Association for many consecutive years.
He was awarded the Third and Second Class Labor Orders by the State, the Medal for the Cause of National Unity, the Medal for the Cause of Education, the Medal for the Cause of Science and Technology, the Medal for the Younger Generation, and the Commemorative Medal for the Cause of Mass Mobilization…
In training and scientific research, he successfully supervised 4 doctoral dissertations (level III) and 1 master's thesis (before 1975). He published 200 scientific articles and reports in specialized journals. Five of his works were put into production. He published textbooks: General Chemistry, Chemical Thermodynamics.
Commenting on Professor Chu Pham Ngoc Son, many generations of students say that he has been the mentor of countless laboratory technicians, guiding numerous undergraduates, trainees, and postgraduate researchers to successfully complete their research projects at universities. He is a person always dedicated to the field of chemistry; even at over 80 years old, he continues his research work, contributing to and serving society, helping to solve pressing social issues related to health and food safety.
