Professor Chu Pham Ngoc Son was born on April 10, 1936 in Saigon, originally from Tien Lu, Hung Yen province. In 1954, he studied at Saigon University of Science. After passing the PCB physical chemistry certificate and the SPCN physical chemistry and natural science certificate, in 1955, he applied to work in the school's chemistry department as a laboratory technician, cleaning experimental bottles, cleaning analytical balances, laboratory tables, preparing and performing some illustrative chemical experiments while the professor stood on the podium teaching theory.
In 1957, he received a bachelor's degree in physics and chemistry and was retained as a lecturer at the Saigon University of Science, while preparing his master's thesis. In 1958, he received a bachelor's degree in mathematics. In 1959, he successfully defended his master's thesis and was sent to the University of Delaware, USA, to do research. In 1962, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis in organic chemistry.
Returning to Vietnam, he returned to Saigon University of Science as a lecturer, gradually promoted to full professor. After 1975, he stayed in Vietnam, continued teaching, and was a lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (the predecessor of the University of Natural Sciences - VNU-HCM City). In 1980, he was awarded the title of Professor by the State.
In 1987, he became Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Experimental Analysis Services and Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Science and Technology Associations. He worked there until his retirement in 2001.
After retirement, Professor Chu Pham Ngoc Son is still active in teaching and social activities. He holds many positions in social organizations such as Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Science and Technology Associations, Vice President of the Vietnam Chemistry Association, Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Analytical Physics - Chemistry - Biology, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Public Health Association, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Chemistry Association. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society.
During his academic career, Professor Chu Pham Ngoc Son has published 200 scientific reports in specialized journals, had 5 works put into production, published many textbooks and monographs on general chemistry and chemical thermodynamics.
In addition to his outstanding achievements in the lecture hall and laboratory, Professor Chu Pham Ngoc Son also made significant contributions to the country and Ho Chi Minh City as a National Assembly delegate for three terms and Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Science and Technology Associations and President of the Ho Chi Minh City Chemistry Association for many consecutive years.
He was awarded by the State the Third Class Labor Medal, Second Class Medal, Medal for the Great National Unity Cause, Medal for the Education Cause, Medal for the Science and Technology Cause, Medal for the Young Generation, Commemorative Medal for the Mass Mobilization Cause...
In training and scientific research, he successfully guided 4 third-level doctoral theses, 1 master's thesis (before 1975). Published 200 articles and scientific reports in specialized journals. 5 works were put into production. Published textbooks: General Chemistry, Chemical Thermodynamics.
Commenting on Professor Chu Pham Ngoc Son, many generations of students said that he was the teacher of many laboratory technicians, guiding many generations of students, trainees and postgraduates to successfully complete their projects at universities. He is a person who is always passionate about chemistry, although he is over 80 years old, he still continues his research work to contribute and serve society, helping to solve "hot" social issues in health care and food safety.
