"The court concluded that Google is a monopoly and has acted as a monopoly to maintain its monopoly," Judge Amit Mehta emphasized in his 227-page ruling on August 5 (US time).

Google is the giant that provides online search tools, controlling approximately 90% of the online search market and 95% of the smartphone search market.

The core issue is the massive payments—tens of billions of dollars annually—that Google makes to Apple and other companies to keep its search engine the default on Apple products and web browsers like Safari and Mozilla.

Lawyers for the U.S. Department of Justice accuse Google of achieving and maintaining its dominance while stifling other search engine providers. Previously, the Department of Justice and about a dozen U.S. states had sued Google for violating antitrust laws.

Google's monopoly allowed it to raise prices for certain search ads. According to Judge Mehta, this is what gave the company more money to keep its search engine at the top.

According to Reuters, the August 5 ruling could pave the way for a second trial to determine remedial measures. These could include breaking up Alphabet, Google's parent company, into several smaller companies.

Alphabet's stock fell 4.5% after the ruling. Advertising from Google accounted for 77% of Alphabet's total revenue in 2023.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland called the ruling "a historic victory for the American people," adding that "no company—no matter how large or influential—is above the law."

Google has stated it will appeal the ruling, according to Kent Walker, president of global affairs at Alphaet. He added that the company will continue to provide the best services to its users.

Over the past four years, U.S. federal antitrust regulators have sued Meta, Amazon, and Apple, alleging that these corporations have maintained illegal monopolies.

All of those lawsuits began during the Donald Trump administration.

Google is suspected of forcing smartphone manufacturers to integrate its search app and place its logo in specific locations on phones.
