Rural bridge and road projects connecting hamlets and communes
Located between Tien River and Hau River, Phu Tan is one of the four island districts of the province established by An Giang Provincial Party Committee in December 1968, in the context of the land being temporarily occupied by the enemy; the number of cadres and party members was small and scattered... The tradition of patriotism and the desire for peace were always full, united in one heart, contributing to the success of the national, democratic, and people's revolution - completely liberating Phu Tan homeland on May 3, 1975.
On July 4, 1977, the 1st District Party Congress determined the focus: "To transform the movement in the district to be vibrant, continuous, and increasingly large-scale and comprehensive, focusing on production, mainly agriculture, and simultaneously carrying out 3 revolutions: Production relations revolution, scientific and technological revolution, cultural and ideological revolution, in which scientific and technological revolution is the key...". The concise direction remains valid today.
From 2019 to present, Phu Tan is the leading district in implementing the production policy of "2 years, 5 crops". This is an effective solution for land circulation, reducing environmental pollution, towards sustainable agricultural production. The island terrain helps this land to be fertile, developing agricultural strengths, and has long been famous for its delicious sticky rice fields. From the production of "3 reductions, 3 increases" to the application of "1 must, 5 reductions", up to now the district continues to be a locality actively implementing the project of sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality specialized rice.
Entering a new phase, the Party Committee, government and people of Phu Tan district have promoted the spirit of dynamism, creativity, and exploitation of existing potential and advantages. Chairwoman of Phu Tan District People's Committee Nguyen Thi Tuyet Minh said that the district has built 9 new rural communes, 2 advanced new rural communes, and 2 civilized urban towns to meet the standards. The average income per capita reached 71.6 million VND/person/year. In addition to rice and sticky rice, some places have converted to growing fruit trees with high economic value; vegetable crops, and aquaculture with contracts for consumption. Currently, there are 11 products that meet the 3-star OCOP (One Commune One Product) standard; traditional craft villages maintain production and stabilize people's livelihoods.
Despite many advantages, the biggest difficulty of the island district is the traffic separation from other districts, and the terrain with many canals and ditches. In recent years, the motto "The State and the People work together" has been highly promoted by the Party Committee, the government and the people, focusing on human and material resources to build new rural areas. Plank bridges, temporary bridges, and narrow rural roads have been gradually eliminated and replaced by concrete bridges, spacious asphalt roads, connecting inter-hamlet and inter-commune traffic smoothly; street lights and trees cover even the remote areas once known as "the land of monkeys and storks".
Mr. Le Trung Anh (Phu My town) shared: “I was born and raised in this hometown, witnessing the changes every day, I feel very proud. Now, in the town center or in remote areas, everything looks green - clean - beautiful, spacious, and people's lives are improving day by day”. Le Bao Khanh (student of class 12A4, Chu Van An High School) expressed: “In April, we participate in traditional activities to learn about the history of the country, of the province, including our hometown Phu Tan, we appreciate the values left by our ancestors; determined to study and practice to contribute to building our hometown to be more and more innovative and beautiful”.
In gratitude to the previous generation, Phu Tan district has done a good job of "Repaying gratitude", taking care of families with meritorious services, people with meritorious services; prioritizing housing support, poverty reduction, production assistance, and fully implementing policies according to regulations. Specifically, preferential policies according to the Ordinance on People with Meritorious Services to the Revolution have been paid to 3,564 people; regular and ad hoc subsidies have been paid to an average of over 97,000 subjects/year, with a total budget of over 290 billion VND (average 58 billion VND/year). The whole district has more than 1,900 households with meritorious services to the revolution. To date, 100% of the housing support target for 42 households with meritorious services to the revolution has been completed.
“Despite the many changes, Phu Tan today still carries a lot of gratitude”. The lyrics in the famous song “Phu Tan’s love” by musician Le Minh have remained intact over the years, just like the love of the land and people on this island. On important occasions, leaders of each period of the district always send messages to the next generation with such deep and meaningful words of gratitude. Phu Tan district has overcome many hardships and sacrifices of many generations; the careful construction of our ancestors; the preservation and nurturing of the entire Party, the entire army, and the entire people. Today’s generation, from leaders, managers to each cadre, party member and people, both respect and are proud, and must take responsibility to continue building the island to become more and more beautiful.
