Kamala Harris has secured enough votes to become the Democratic Party's nominee.

Democratic delegates began voting online this week to select their nominee. To secure the nomination, a candidate needs more than 2,350 delegate votes.

Harris emerged as the leading Democratic candidate after President Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign last month under pressure from the party amid concerns about his health and age.

The US Vice President quickly gained the support of a key figure in the party and was the only candidate qualified for the party's vote.

"I am thrilled to know that we have enough delegates to secure the nomination. And later this month, we will gather in unity in Chicago, where we will have the opportunity to celebrate this historic moment together," Harris said. President Biden said he "couldn't be prouder" of his nominee.

The Democratic National Committee has pledged to announce its presidential nomination before August 7th, prior to the party's national convention in Chicago from August 19-22. The committee argues that the online voting is necessary to ensure the nomination process is completed before August 7th, the deadline set by Ohio law for a nominee to be nominated before the state vote can begin.

On the other hand, Vice President Kamala Harris plans to meet in person with leading candidates for her running mate position later this week before making a decision, according to Reuters. On August 2nd, Harris met with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, one of the potential candidates, in a meeting that lasted 90 minutes.

Harris is expected to make a decision by August 5th before making her first public appearance with her running mate in Philadelphia the following day. Other potential candidates include Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and Senator Mark Kelly.
