From 3 p.m., when the machinery, fishing rods, fishing nets and necessities were ready, the squid fishing boat of fisherman Nguyen Van (in Canh Duong commune, Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) set sail with 7 crew members on board.

After traveling about 10 nautical miles, the boat dropped the parachute into the sea and drifted on the waters of Hon La Bay, strong winds causing the boat to rock violently many times.

As night fell, the fishermen quickly turned on the powerful lighting system on both sides of the boat, illuminating the entire area. This was also to attract the squid.

Then, each person personally hooks colorful artificial baits onto sharp hooks and swings the rod into the sea to catch squid.

Having just dropped the hook into the sea, fisherman Le Manh Cuong (in Canh Duong commune, Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) pulled up the rod and revealed a fresh squid stuck to the hook, its skin sparkling with phosphorescent spots.

Fisherman Le Manh Cuong shared: "I have been fishing for squid at night in Hon La Bay for many years, I have to stay up all night to catch squid. Squid is available all year round but the main season usually starts from February to the end of August of the lunar calendar. This time, I caught a lot of squid so I feel comfortable, the feeling of pulling each squid up is very enjoyable."

Next to him, boat owner Nguyen Van said: "For about a week now, squid has appeared very densely in Hon La Bay. On average, each trip, many fishermen catch 30-50 kg of squid, some boats catch over 100 kg."

After catching the squid on the boat, fishermen divide the squid into different types according to size and have different selling prices, ranging from 120,000 to 400,000 VND/kg.

The weather turned cold, the fog combined with strong winds made the air colder, fishermen had to wear protective gear to keep warm, many hungry people put the squid they had just caught into a bowl of hot noodles to eat.

Squid fishermen in Canh Duong village also cast nets into the sea to catch fish in Hon La Bay.

Not only squid fishing, fishermen also catch fish with nets. After dropping the nets into the sea, fishermen use modern seafood detectors to detect fish and then spread the nets. Each net is pulled onto the boat and brings in dozens of kilograms of various types of fish.

After fishing for squid until around 5am the next day, fisherman Nguyen Van's boat started to return to shore with a full hold of squid. Despite the sleepless night, every fisherman's face was radiant because of the good squid season.

On shore, many traders were waiting to buy fresh squid and fish as soon as the ship docked.

Speaking to Dan Viet Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tiep - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Canh Duong Commune (Quang Trach District, Quang Binh Province), said: "Fishermen in the area fishing for squid in the waters of Hon La Bay have had a bumper season of squid and many species of fish, such as anchovies, mackerel... Currently, the local government has encouraged fishermen to take advantage of favorable weather, continue to go offshore, stick to the sea, and at the same time resolutely fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing."
