On January 20, in New York, the United States, the United Nations Security Council held an open ministerial discussion on the situation in the Middle East and Palestine under the chairmanship of Mr. Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, the country that holds the Presidency of the Security Council in January 2025.

Attending and speaking at the meeting were United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, many Foreign Ministers and Ambassadors, and representatives of more than 60 countries.

The UN Secretary-General and delegates welcomed the ceasefire agreements between Israel and Hamas announced on 15 January, and between Israel and Lebanon, which will take effect from 26 November 2024, as well as the formation of new governments in Lebanon and Syria, considering them positive steps towards lasting peace in Gaza and the Middle East region.

On the other hand, many opinions expressed caution and concern about the risk of violence breaking out again; emphasizing the need for a comprehensive, fair and sustainable solution to the Palestine issue and other hotspots in the Middle East, in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, welcomed the newly reached ceasefire agreements; highly appreciated the international diplomatic efforts that contributed to promoting dialogue between the parties, bringing prospects to end the conflict in Gaza and creating a foundation for sustainable peace in the region.

The Vietnamese representative affirmed the importance of complying with international law, the United Nations Charter, relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly as well as provisional measures of the International Court of Justice (ICJ); emphasizing that the implementation and maintenance of ceasefires must go hand in hand with the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, the release of all hostages, and ensuring the smooth flow of humanitarian aid to people throughout the Gaza Strip with the key role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

On this occasion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang reaffirmed Vietnam's support for the two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders; called on the international community to urgently deploy efforts to rebuild Gaza, restore the socio-economy, and consolidate the foundation for a lasting peace.
