LTHN patient, 14 months old in Gia Lam, Hanoi, initially only had rashes in the groin and thighs, without typical symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease. Then, the child suddenly had a high fever and convulsions, forcing the family to take him to the emergency room.
After 4 hours of intensive treatment, the patient's condition did not improve, with a persistent high fever and unstable hemodynamics, requiring an increased dose of vasopressors. The consultation agreed to prescribe continuous emergency hemodialysis for 40 hours, which helped the child improve significantly.
After 5 days of treatment, the child stopped using vasopressors and sedatives, was weaned off the ventilator, had the endotracheal tube removed, became alert, had good spontaneous breathing, and stable hemodynamics.
Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by an intestinal virus, mainly transmitted through the digestive tract. The disease occurs year-round, often in children under 5 years old. Parents should take their children to the doctor early when they have symptoms of high fever, poor appetite, crying for no reason, and vomiting a lot for timely treatment.
