50 years after the country's reunification and renovation, literature and art of overseas Vietnamese have continued to affirm their important role in spreading the image of a peaceful, integrated and strongly growing Vietnam in the new era.
Desire to connect
The flow of literature and art of Vietnamese people living abroad has conveyed and expressed positive emotions, the spirit of proactively seeking the roots; moving towards the desire to integrate, connect and create for an image of a modern Vietnam, rich in tradition and humanity. Even though living far from home, whether belonging to the second, third or further generation, most overseas artists still maintain a spiritual bond closely tied to their roots.
Literature, music, and painting of Vietnamese people abroad are both a means of expressing their thoughts and a bridge connecting the past, present, and future between the homeland and the international community.
At the international scientific conference "Literature and art of Vietnamese people abroad after 50 years of national reunification, innovation and development (1975-2025)" recently held in Hanoi, researchers assessed that the themes of homeland, the status of Vietnamese people in modern times, memories of war, the journey of reconciliation, the desire for integration... appear abundantly in the works of our overseas Vietnamese. Love for the country, people, language, and culture are the main materials and spirits in many works. That factor has helped the authors become cultural ambassadors, contributing to promoting the image of their nation to friends around the world. Many big names after a long time living and creating abroad have returned to their homeland, continuing to contribute and spread the cultural values from their birthplace, such as Professor Tran Van Khe, sculptor Diem Phung Thi...
Literature, music, and painting of Vietnamese people abroad are both a means of expressing their thoughts and a bridge connecting the past, present, and future between the homeland and the international community.
Professor, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Politburo member, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, emphasized: It is necessary to affirm that Vietnamese artists and intellectuals abroad have made significant contributions to the unity and diversity of the country's literature and arts. Literary and artistic creations by Vietnamese people abroad are increasingly diverse. Many achievements in literature, music, fine arts, theater, cinema, photography, etc. that clearly express the Vietnamese national identity have been recognized in the world and in the host countries.
In addition to the creative team, the team of Vietnamese literary and art theorists and critics abroad is also gradually increasing, having the conditions to receive modern theoretical knowledge, creating a quite vibrant academic forum. On the digital platform and thanks to being equipped with new approaches, new methods, and new means, their works have new discoveries about Vietnamese literature and art, contributing to the modernization of domestic literary theory and criticism.
According to literary researchers, there have been many positive changes in the thoughts and feelings of overseas Vietnamese expressed through literary and artistic works. Many works have become “spiritual medicine” to heal historical wounds. The works have gradually reached a common voice about the aspiration to live peacefully, kindly and towards the future. It is a cultural journey from “closing the past” to “opening the future”.
Promote inspiration and spread
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Ky commented: In addition to the remarkable efforts and results, the process of turning back to the country, to the roots; the efforts to reconcile, harmonize, close the past, and move towards the future among a group of Vietnamese artists abroad and in the country still encounter some barriers and obstacles; there is a psychological gap, due to inferiority complex. The reason is due to differences in viewpoints that have existed for a long time or are influenced by some deceptive and provocative propaganda.
Literature and art researchers have pointed out that the Party, the State and the Vietnam Fatherland Front always respectfully affirm and highly appreciate the position and great contributions of our overseas Vietnamese to the cause of national construction, development and defense. This is demonstrated through many important guidelines and policies in the process of Doi Moi, typically Resolution No. 36/NQ-TW dated March 26, 2004 of the Politburo on work with overseas Vietnamese, Directive No. 45-CT/TW dated May 19, 2015 of the Politburo on continuing to promote the implementation of Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW in the new situation and in Party Congress documents over many terms.
In order to promote the harmonious and sustainable development of overseas Vietnamese literature and art, the Party and State continue to create a favorable and open environment to encourage artistic creations that are closely connected to their roots; organize creative camps, competitions, and exhibitions specifically for Vietnamese artists abroad; recognize and honor the contributions of overseas Vietnamese in the field of culture and art...
In fact, the arousal and dissemination of the creative spirit in the overseas Vietnamese community is gradually being institutionalized into specific and practical solutions. Many overseas Vietnamese have returned to the country to launch their works, and in the opposite direction, many domestic authors have been active in spreading culture and spirit to overseas Vietnamese and the younger generation. It is worth mentioning the book series "Hello Vietnamese" which won the A prize at the 6th National Book Award in 2023 and has been spread to many countries with Vietnamese people living in the world; encouraging Vietnamese children to love their mother tongue, create literature, and participate in summer camps organized by Vietnamese artists.
Referring to the perspective of outstanding films by directors of Vietnamese origin living abroad, such as: Tran Anh Hung, Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh, Ho Quang Minh, Pham Thien An, etc., Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, President of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Cinema Development, said that excellent literary and artistic works are an effective bridge connecting Vietnam with the world and bringing the world to Vietnam. The important thing is to evoke the "national soul" and responsibility towards the country of those living far from their homeland, to join hands to create a cultural wave.
The literature and arts of overseas Vietnamese need to be recognized as one of the important forces in connecting generations within the Vietnamese community, between memories and the future, between distant lands but with the same roots. The 50th anniversary of national reunification is an opportunity for the creative team of literature and arts to reflect on a difficult yet glorious national journey, an opportunity to inspire a new creative flow in harmony and sustainable development.
