With a length of more than 1.3 km and 6 lanes, the tunnel project across the Han River will connect Hai Chau district and Son Tra district.

In 2016, Da Nang proposed a plan to build a tunnel under the Han River with a total length of more than 1.3 km. The Han River tunnel project will connect Hai Chau district and Son Tra district.
The tunnel is designed with 6 lanes, of which the submerged tunnel is more than 900 m long, the rest is open tunnel.
Recently, the People's Committee of Da Nang City reported to the City People's Council for consideration and approval of the policy and capital allocation to prepare for project investment in the medium-term capital plan for the period 2021-2025 and the 2024 capital plan as a basis for implementing the next steps.
One end of the tunnel is located at the intersection of Dong Da - Tran Phu street in Hai Chau district.
The area on the west bank of the Han River where the tunnel will pass through is in Hai Chau district. The tunnel across the Han River is part of the planning of Da Nang city for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister, with investment phases from 2031 - 2045.
The remaining tunnel head belongs to Son Tra district, located at the Van Don - Tran Hung Dao intersection.

The plan to build a tunnel under the Han River has had controversial opinions about its effectiveness as well as concerns about the tunnel construction.
The Da Nang City People's Committee said that it has directed the Department of Transport to propose capital allocation in 2024 to carry out investment preparation work. The Department of Transport has proactively worked with experts in the field to research options as well as review and update related zoning plans to ensure consistency. On that basis, the Department will develop a survey plan to serve the work of selecting a design consultant to prepare a project pre-feasibility study report.
The Da Nang People's Committee also said that the next implementation plan is to complete the selection of consultants for the pre-feasibility study report after 3 months from the date of capital allocation for investment preparation. The expected time is September 2024. After that, complete and submit the project pre-feasibility study report to the competent authority for appraisal in December and complete the feasibility study report in August 2025.
