In a study published in the journal Cancer, researchers from Australia analyzed incidences and deaths due to 30 types of cancer across 185 countries and territories by 2022 to come up with projections for 2050.
The study predicts that the total number of cancer cases in men will increase from 10. 3 million in 2022 to 19 million by 2050 (an 84% increase). [1] Cancer deaths are projected to rise from 5. 4 million in 2022, to 10. 5 million in 2050, a 93% increase. [2] Deaths among men aged 65 years and older are expected to increase 117%. [3]
New research predicts that the number of cancer cases and deaths in men will increase globally by 2050, especially among those aged 65 years or older.
Countries with lower incomes and life expectancy are also projected to see a greater increase in cancer deaths among men. "Between 2022 and 2050, in Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean, cases and deaths are expected to rise by 2. 5 times; in contrast, Europe is expected to increase by about half", write the researchers.
Men are more likely to die from cancer than women due to behaviours such as smoking and drinking alcohol - conditions associated with exposure to carcinogens. They also have less access to screening programmes.
Just as in 2022, lung cancer is projected to be the leading cause of cancer and cancer-related deaths among men by 2050.
Researchers say there is a need to strengthen access and healthcare infrastructure in order to improve current cancer treatment outcomes and prepare for the expected increase by 2050.
They wrote that expanding coverage health global population can strengthen "basic cancer care options", while noting that low-income countries are disproportionately affected by poor outcomes in cancer treatment and low universal health coverage.
Earlier this year, a report by the American Cancer Society found that population growth and aging are major contributors to the cancer burden in America. the world, with a global population of about 8 billion in 2022 and expected to reach 9. 7 billion by 2050.
When it comes to the number of cancer cases worldwide, "we think that will increase to 35 million by 2050, mainly due to an aging population", says Dr. William Dahut, Director science It's the American Cancer Society, as I said before.
The association says that if more people use tobacco and are obese, along with other cancer risk factors, the expected number of cancers could be even higher, especially in low-income countries.
