Mikhail Podolyak, Advisor to the Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian President, admitted that the country's army is tired of the ongoing conflict.
In an interview with journalist Natalya Vlashchenko on YouTube, when she said that soldiers suffer psychological stress due to the monotony and instability of the conflict, Mr. Podolyak emphasized: “Of course there is fatigue. The conflict is long, any long war, like any long crisis, causes changes in mood."
Noting that the Ukrainian army is short of weapons and resources, the adviser said: “People do not understand how (the situation) will continue to develop, where the agreements will go. People are tired of the monotony and it is extremely negative.”
However, according to the official, people's confidence in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and in themselves "has not diminished at all".
Meanwhile, on the evening of August 5, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country needs to prepare the basis for signing a peace agreement with Russia, stating: "Our goal is to prepare a real basis for ending the conflict in a just manner this year."
The official website of the President of Ukraine quoted Mr. Zelensky as saying that these days, Kiev is holding negotiations with members of the working group related to the "Peace Formula" on how and when to announce a specific action plan for its implementation.
The “peace formula” proposed by President Zelensky previously included a return to the 1991 borders and Russian withdrawal of troops from Ukrainian territory. Moscow has rejected these conditions.
However, in July, the leader admitted that both the world and he himself saw the need to end the conflict soon, while hinting that it was not necessary to return to the 1991 border as a condition for sitting at the negotiating table.
Earlier, in mid-June, Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined conditions for a peaceful end to the conflict in Ukraine. Accordingly, to begin negotiations, Kiev must withdraw its troops from all territories of the newly annexed Russian regions, including Donbass, Kherson and Zaporozhye provinces.
In addition, Kiev must officially announce its rejection of plans to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). President Putin stressed that the longer it takes, the more difficult the conditions for negotiations will be for the Eastern European country.
President Zelensky's office has rejected Putin's proposal, saying the initiative implies Ukraine giving up its sovereignty.
