Proud of 50 years of Gia Lai music

(GLO)- Whenever mentioning Gia Lai, everyone often thinks of a land with much rain and sunshine, a place with many rivers, streams, green forests, deep mountains, high passes, deep ravines... but no less poetic.

For thousands of years, the ethnic groups in the province have lived in close association with the mountains, forests, and grasslands. People and nature here are intertwined, creating a space that is both virtual and real, both close and distant, and legendary.

With diligence, hard work, skillful hands and soaring imagination, the ethnic people in the province have created a unique and rich folk music treasure, attracting the attention of researchers and music composers at home and abroad.

Over the past 50 years, since Gia Lai province was liberated, many works of collecting and researching folk music as well as many musical works written about Gia Lai have been born, serving the public's need for artistic enjoyment, contributing to introducing the image of the country and people of Gia Lai to friends near and far.

Regarding research and collection, typical works and works are: Tay Nguyen folk songs (Le Toan Hung); Preserving and promoting traditional cultural capital of ethnic groups (many authors); Gong art (many authors); Fôlclo Bahnar (editor-in-chief To Ngoc Thanh, 1988); Musical instruments of ethnic groups in Gia Lai (Dao Huy Quyen); Studying the characteristics of Jrai-Bahnar folk songs (Dao Huy Quyen); Jrai folk songs (Le Xuan Hoan); Protecting the cultural space of gongs in the Tay Nguyen (many authors); Some basic characteristics of Jrai folk music (Le Xuan Hoan); Bahnar folk songs (Le Xuan Hoan); Studying the scale of tones in Bahnar folk music (Le Xuan Hoan)...

Regarding compositions and works, over the past 50 years, generations of Gia Lai musicians have made worthy contributions to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland with songs that are both imbued with national identity and bearing the mark of the times.

Many songs have been selected and published by provincial authorities in books such as: Meeting the Highlands (many authors); Echoes of the Highlands (many authors); Moonlit Night of the Highlands (many authors); Legend of Ya Ly (Dao Huy Quyen); Songs from the Mountain Town (Ngoc Tuong); Selected Songs of Le Xuan Hoan; Gia Lai - the heroic land (many authors); Highlands - Love (Le Hong Phuong); 105 songs of Le Xuan Hoan...

The most typical works include: “Tay Nguyen Love Song” by musician Hoang Van; “Meeting the Highlands” by Tran Chung; “Tay Nguyen Rain” by Xuan Giao; “Singing in the Moonlit Night of Chu Prong” by Vu Thanh; “Highland Flame” by Tran Tien; “Hey, Ayun Pa Girl” by Minh Khang; “Tay Nguyen Sinus Night” by Van Chung,

Poetry by Dao Phong Lan; “Sunshine drops on the plateau” by Le Xuan Hoan; “Night singing in the communal house” by Ngoc Tuong; “White sun in the green plateau” by Ngoc Minh; “Sound of gongs in the Central Highlands” by Thao Nam Giang; “Drinking wine” by Hoang Phi Ung; “Pleiku city at dawn” music by Truong Duc Ha, poetry by Le Nhuoc Thuy...

Although the number of works and projects is not much, it is enough to once again affirm the great role of the folk music treasure of ethnic groups in Gia Lai and the responsibility of researchers and musicians in "the cause of building and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture with strong national identity".

The folk music treasure not only contributes to affirming the cultural identity of the Central Highlands in the past, present and future, but also has a great influence on the development of the common culture of the whole country.

Stemming from the multifaceted value of collected and researched works as well as songs born from Gia Lai land, more and more people appreciate and love the folk music treasure and songs developed from the musical materials of the Central Highlands.

Many singers have chosen songs with the sound of the Central Highlands to enter famous "music arenas" at home and abroad. And there are also many singers who have become famous starting from performing Central Highlands music works, including artists and singers such as: Mang Thi Hoi, Y Moan, Siu Black, Ro Cham Phiang, Y Phon Ksor, Thuy Ha, Ali Viet, Y Joel Knul, Y Sih, Y Yun, Siu H'Blup, Mo Ly... This once again affirms the eternal vitality of Central Highlands music in the flow of Vietnamese music.
