China voices support for Iran to protect'sovereignty and security'

In a phone call on August 11th, Foreign policy The Chinese Emperor told Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani that Beijing supports Tehran "in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and national dignity in accordance with the law".

Follow Ministry of Foreign Affairs China, Wang said: "China also supports Iran's efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region and is willing to maintain close contact with Iran".

"The top priority is to jointly urge all parties to seriously implement UN Security Council resolutions and facilitate a comprehensive, lasting ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible".

He also described China and Iran as comprehensive strategic partners and said that China is ready to cooperate with the new Iranian government.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has held talks with his counterparts in Iran, Egypt and Jordan over the past week.

This is the first phone call between them since Ismail Haniyeh, political Haniyeh was last seen at the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

On August 11, Mr. Wang Yi again condemned the assassination, saying that it "seriously infringes on Iran's sovereignty and directly undermines the process of ceasefire negotiations in Gaza".

According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Bagheri said that although Iran is committed to maintaining regional security, it will remain resolute in defending its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Hamas and Iran claimed that Israel carried out the assassination and vowed to retaliate.

Tensions have raised fears of a wider conflict in the region, prompting Chinese embassies in Lebanon and Iran to issue security alerts.

The phone call between Mr. Wang and Mr. Bagheri was one of many that took place over the past week regarding the region, as he had similar conversations with his counterparts in Egypt and Jordan, calling for joint efforts to de-escalate tensions and facilitate a ceasefire in Gaza.

A week before the assassination, Palestinian factions including Fatah and Hamas signed a "solidarity agreement" in Beijing aimed at resolving divisions and building unity.

Also on 11 August, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian nominated Abbas Araqchi as his country's Foreign Minister.
