The model was developed by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Vietnam, in collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. Agriculture and forestry and Rural Development of Phu Yen Province is organized in four major fishing ports on the province's territory: Dong Tac, Phu Luch, Tien Chau and Dinh Phúc. The total budget for implementing this model is more than 1. 1 billion VND.
According to Nguyễn Thu Trang, WWF Vietnam project manager, most of the waste generated by fishing vessels is not collected but discharged directly into the sea.

Accordingly, after signing the commitment, each fishing vessel is supported by WWF with two additional bags of nets to contain waste. Thus, every sea trip fishermen not only bring back fish and shrimp but also carry trash ashore for concentrated treatment.
So far, WWF has organized training classes, supported about 1,000 net bags for fishing vessels and assisted with garbage collection at four ports, each of which had eight hand trucks carrying 660 liters of trash, Nguyen Thu Trang said.
According to fisherman Dao Duy Nam, owner of the fishing vessel PY91739TS in Phu Doan district, previously, marine aquaculture fishermen usually focused only on work with little concern for protecting the marine environment.
I also reminded you sailors to raise awareness, responsibility in collecting, sorting and putting the garbage on shore. The sea provides livelihood for fishermen so all fishers need to maintain a clean marine environment, said Dao Duy Nam.
Fisherman Trần Văn Lâm, ship owner and captain of the fishing vessel PY90118TS in Phu Doan district (Tuy Hoa city) said: In addition to garbage containers provided by Phu Yen Fishing Port Management Board, my family is also equipped with many other tools for the purpose of collecting all household waste, torn or damaged nets on the boat to take back to shore.
According to Mr. Ha Viên, Director of the Management Board of Phu Yen Fisheries Port, although only recently implemented a model for fishermen bringing garbage to shore in a short period of time, fishermen across the province reacted very positively. As of July 15, 92 fishing vessels of fishermen brought about 685kg of trash ashore, mainly plastic waste.
In addition to promoting awareness among fishermen, the authorities have also strengthened inspection, monitoring and punishment of discharges into the marine environment.
