Toxic content on social networks can lead to many consequences but is still often promoted to attract viewers and "increase views".
Recently, toxic content and false information have been prominent issues on popular social networks in Vietnam such as Facebook and TikTok, despite the intervention of authorities to rectify them. According to the review results of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information ( Ministry of Information and Communications ) announced in 2023, the social network TikTok in Vietnam encountered many serious errors such as not having effective control measures for violating content, fake news, nonsense, toxic content, and even dangerous content.

The report also pointed out that TikTok does not have effective control measures to prevent the trading, sale, and advertising of counterfeit goods, aphrodisiacs, and functional foods of unknown origin. Nearly a year after the conclusion of the inspection and examination by the management agency, toxic content is still rampant on this platform without any or very little intervention from the responsible businesses. Many bad, untrue, and profiteering videos have appeared and existed for a long time before being spoken out and protested by users, forcing video owners to post corrections, apologies, or delete videos to hide their wrongdoings. Thanh Nien contacted TikTok Vietnam to clarify how content is controlled on this platform in the work of protecting users, as well as the impact of algorithms that help detect content that poses potential risks to users. However, in response to many questions raised, the representative of TikTok Vietnam was "reticent" and only responded with general content, not focusing on the questions raised. Accordingly, the representative affirmed: "TikTok always strives to empower users to freely share their creativity, knowledge and passion with the community. However, when we find content that violates TikTok's Community Standards or policies, we will proceed to remove the content, regardless of whether the content is posted publicly or privately." In addition, this representative did not provide any other information. TikTok's "content deletion" is also not really clear when there are many videos with toxic and false content that still exist for many days, even weeks after being posted, reaching tens of thousands of viewers, showing that the platform's control tools do not bring the necessary effectiveness in controlling false information.

Despite being asked, TikTok did not give any recommendations to users to identify and be cautious with unverified information; products or services that pose potential risks to their health. For content that is considered to be in violation but has been deleted from the account owner's personal page, TikTok Vietnam did not announce the handling method, and at the same time remained silent in its preventive measures, preventing the sharing of such harmful and false content before it was deleted. With the power of social networks, the ability to spread videos, images, and text is very strong, just a few minutes after being posted, the shared post can be downloaded, photographed or reposted (shared) in many different ways. This situation not only occurs in Vietnam but also appears in other countries around the world . Concerns about harmful and inappropriate content being shared and spread quickly on TikTok, along with concerns about privacy violations and user data theft, have led many countries and territories to ban TikTok, such as India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Somalia, Pakistan, and recently the US. Places that prohibit government officials from installing TikTok on their devices include: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Norway, and the European Union.
