After running several pilot programs in the UK, Google concluded that the country could add about $533 billion to the economy. In addition, workers would save 122 hours a year by using AI for administrative tasks.
Simple steps like enabling employees to use AI and training them in a few hours can double the adoption of new technologies, boosting economic growth.
According to an analysis by Public First – Google’s partner in the program, two-thirds of workers – especially women, older people, and those with lower starting positions – have never used generative AI at work.
Debbie Weinstein, President of Google Europe, Middle East and Africa, pointed out that one barrier preventing them from using AI is the fear of being illegal and unfair.
“People want ‘permission to use AI,’” Weinstein said in an interview. “‘Is it OK if I do this?’ So giving them that assurance is really important.”
Once started, a few hours of training will help them gain confidence, leading to more and longer-term use of the technology.
According to Google, such small interventions helped close the AI adoption gap among the pilot participants. For example, before the training, just 17% of women over 55 used AI weekly and 9% daily. Three months later, the percentages rose to 56% and 29%.
