According to data from online analytics firm Similarweb, the number of Telegram users online skyrocketed to 3.7 million on July 30, the day the first riots broke out in the UK, in which at least 50 police officers were injured.
On July 29, the day of the stabbing that killed three children and injured 10 others in the town of Southport, the number of Telegram users increased from an average of 2.7 million per day since the beginning of 2024 to 3.1 million.
Authorities, police and analysts in the UK believe the riots were fueled and organized by online platforms including Telegram, TikTok and X.
On August 7, the anti-terrorism organization Tech Against Terrorism issued an urgent warning about Telegram being used by extremists to organize riots in the UK. According to the organization, Telegram's inadequate censorship of extremist content is contributing to violence and unrest across the UK.
Meanwhile, the UK's media watchdog Ofcom has urged tech platforms to "proactively" remove content related to violence and incitement to racial hatred.
