Huge challenge for Vietnam men's volleyball team

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/11/2024

The Vietnamese men's volleyball team faces a big challenge in the Southeast Asian Volleyball Championship (SEA V.League) when losing players while the opponent is getting stronger. Tomorrow (August 16), coach Tran Dinh Tien and his team will compete in the first round of the SEA V.League 2024, facing the host Philippines. This is an opponent that lost to the Vietnamese men's volleyball team with the same score of 2-3 in the last two rounds of the SEA V.League 2023. However, this rematch is considered to be much more difficult for the Vietnamese team , because the number 1 setter Dinh Van Duy, who was voted the best setter in both rounds of the SEA V.League last year, has to be absent. "Dinh Van Duy was injured while participating in the Military Volleyball Cup with the Border Guard team last month. The athlete's injury is on the way to recovery. With the hope that this talented athlete will fully recover from his injury and avoid unfortunate consequences, Dinh Van Duy will not participate in the SEA V.League this time," said General Secretary of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation Le Tri Truong.

Setter Nguyen Huynh Anh Phi was called up as a replacement for Dinh Van Duy. However, he and Dinh Van Tu will find it difficult to fill the void left by their teammates. The setter position is extremely important, even deciding the success or failure of the whole team, so coach Tran Dinh Tien has increased training for 2 players to replace Dinh Van Duy and hopes that they will have confidence when entering the match. In addition, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team also welcomed the return of opposite setter Tu Thanh Thuan. This 32-year-old hitter is expected to help the Vietnamese men's volleyball team have more effective attacking options. However, this veteran hitter has passed his peak, so the Vietnamese team's attack still relies on hitters such as Nguyen Ngoc Thuan, Truong The Khai, Pham Van Hiep, Tran Duy Tuyen... In the first leg of SEA V.League 2023, the Vietnamese team ranked 3rd out of 4 participating teams when losing to Indonesia and Thailand with the same score of 0-3, then winning 3-2 against the Philippines. In the second leg, coach Tran Dinh Tien and his team lost to Indonesia but played explosively, beating Thailand and the Philippines to finish second. In this SEA V.League, the Philippines team has made a strong investment by recruiting talented Italian coach Angiolino Frigoni. The coach who led the Italian men's volleyball team to the world championship, European championship and a team of assistants is expected to help Philippine volleyball transform. The goal of the Philippines team is to prepare for the 2025 World Volleyball Championship as host. The Philippines team, which was considered the weakest of the four teams participating in the SEA V.League, has now become stronger and has home field advantage while Indonesia and Thailand still maintain stable forces, so the Vietnamese team must make efforts to avoid the risk of empty-handedness. According to the SEA V.League stage 1 schedule, after the match with the host Philippines on August 16, the Vietnamese team will face Thailand (August 17), then play the final match with Indonesia (August 18). Exactly 1 week after stage 1, coach Tran Dinh Tien and his team will compete in stage 2 in Indonesia.
