On the afternoon of January 21, a representative of the Ministry of Public Security's Permanent Office for United Nations Peacekeeping said that Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Hai - a Vietnamese police officer - has just been appointed as Acting Special Assistant and Chief of the United Nations Police Advisory Office from January 2025.
The Special Assistant and Chief of Staff Adviser is a position within the leadership of the United Nations Police Office.
According to the Ministry of Public Security's Permanent Office for UN Peacekeeping Operations, the decision to appoint a dispatched police officer as Special Assistant and Chief of Office is unprecedented. This is the first time this important position has been assigned to a dispatched police officer like Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Hai.

The representative of the Ministry of Public Security added that previously, this position was only assigned to long-term staff working in the United Nations. This shows that the United Nations leadership highly appreciates the capacity and effectiveness of Lieutenant Colonel Hai.
As Acting Special Assistant and Chief of the Office of the United Nations Police Advisor, Lieutenant Colonel Hai will be responsible for organizing and operating all areas of the Office's activities; checking and reviewing documents from functional departments before submitting them to the Police Advisor for approval.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Hai is also the person who arranges the working program for the UN Police Advisor and Deputy Advisor; at the same time, he is the official spokesperson of the UN Police Advisor, and the focal point of the Police Department working with higher-level Offices such as the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General and the Office of the Deputy Secretary-General for Peacekeeping.
Lieutenant Colonel Hai will also manage the official communication channels of the United Nations Police via the website, Twitter and Facebook platforms.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Hai shared that with 17 years of experience in the training environment of the People's Police Academy, the knowledge and skills he has been trained and fostered in peacekeeping activities have given him more motivation and confidence to take on this important task.
In 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Hai was the first Vietnamese police officer to be selected to work at the Police Department, United Nations Peace Operations Center, New York (USA) as a United Nations expert on preventing and combating transnational organized crime. To be selected, he had to go through many rigorous selection rounds to surpass nearly 200 candidates from many countries.
After 2 years of service, from August 2024, Lieutenant Colonel Hai's term of office was extended. In January 2025, with his solid capacity, he was appointed as Special Assistant and Chief of the Office of the United Nations Police Advisor.
As Special Assistant, Lt Col Hai reports directly to Commander Faisal Shahkar, Police Adviser and Director of the United Nations Police Division. He also advises on all areas of the Adviser’s decision-making authority, including strategic policy development, mission management and support, and recruitment.
Being appointed to an important position at the United Nations Police Department is not only a source of personal pride but also shows that the ability of Vietnamese police officers fully meets the requirements of the United Nations in peacekeeping operations.
