School memories come flooding back

In the song "Surfing on the Waves" , Dangrangto raps: "Because of passion, I used to plaster walls/ With hard work, I will never give up/ Never say I can't do it". Dangrangto shared that coming to this festival and meeting all the young people, he felt like he was back in high school with many memories flooding back. When he was 17 or 18 years old, who did Dangrangto want to become? "At that time, I thought about my plans, about the possibility of success or failure of each one. I also thought a lot," Dang said.

In a conversation with Tuoi Tre before the consultation day, Dang said "being an amateur rapper, figuring things out on your own has its advantages" and "if I hadn't fallen many times on this self-study journey, there wouldn't be Dangrangto today". However, for Dang, "education is always the most thorough and clear path to a better life alongside passion".

Journey of finding yourself

Born and raised in Vinh Phuc, Dangrangto's path to music was not smooth. Having been passionate about rap/hip hop since 8th grade, with a pure and innocent love, "country boy" Tran Hai Dang began to learn and explore composing and then released his first songs on the SoundCloud platform. Dang's idols from those early days were Karik and Justatee - two coaches of Rap Viet later.

In contrast to the somewhat flashy appearance on his YouTube channel or personal Facebook when he first became famous, his SoundCloud channel is like a different world for Dangrangto. In that quiet land, the young rapper confided his little stories over the past 9, 10 years. Music is present like a close friend, nameless but strongly connected.

Dangrangto's SoundCloud history still contains hundreds of songs he listened to in the past. Everything from pop, Rnb, soul, dark, reggae, lofi, trap...

But mostly rap/hip hop from underground/indie artists. Those are the types of music and names that are not very popular.

The repertoire, or more precisely, the resume of the soul, revealed a personality, a unique musical aesthetic since Dang was very young. And that passion for music grew "without any but". However, his parents wanted Dang to study abroad. Who wants their child to become a rapper?

At a crossroads in his life, the young man was forced to choose between studying abroad or pursuing his passion. But if he chose music, his family would not support him.

"At that time, I decided to change direction and try my dream. I had the mentality that once I started, I had to go all in, I couldn't turn back" and so Dang began "entering the rocky life that I knew I was passionate about". To earn money to live and make music, Dangrangto worked as a waiter at a coffee shop, sold clothes online, drove a motorbike taxi, and even worked as a bricklayer...

As Dang expressed through the rap: "I have to stand under many rains, but I have gradually become stronger than before/ Don't let the waves make you lose your grip/ No wave can make me fall". To Dang, rap is a colorful world, everyone can find their own space to express their personality as a musician or satisfy their interests and spiritual needs as an audience.

It is a place where he can express himself, to tell everyone about himself, and at the same time discover himself through rap, new genres, new expressions or new perspectives on the same topic. "Of course there are still things I keep to myself, but everything I use rap to share is honest," Dang said with a smile.
