Former President Trump intends to sue the Justice Department for $100 million in damages for executing a search warrant for his Mar-a-Lago resort in 2022. Trump's side accuses Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray of engaging in "malicious political prosecution to influence the election results to prevent Trump from being re-elected." Trump's lawyer, Daniel Epstein, issued a legal notice, saying Trump plans to sue the Justice Department for allegedly applying "inconsistent standards" and "clearly violating constitutional principles" when approving searches of the former president and his family's resort in Palm Beach, Florida. Garland and Wray are accused of breaking the rules to harm Trump. The US Justice Department has six months to respond to the above complaint. If the two sides fail to reach an agreement by that time, the complaint will be transferred to federal court. The FBI conducted a search of Mar-a-Lago on Aug. 8, 2022, resulting in the seizure of more than 100 classified documents, according to a 37-count indictment later filed against Trump by special counsel Jack Smith. Trump, 78, has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including willful retention of sensitive defense records and conspiracy to obstruct justice. However, federal judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case in July, saying Smith had been "improperly appointed." Both Epstein's lawyer and Trump spokesman Steven Cheung have called the raid and case against the former president an attempt by Democrats to "interfere in the election."
