The first female general of the Vietnam People's Army was Ms. Nguyen Thi Dinh (1920-1992).

Ms. Nguyen Thi Dinh was born into a farming family with a tradition of patriotism in Luong Hoa commune, Giong Trom district, Ben Tre province. She joined the revolution at the age of 16 and was admitted to the Indochinese Communist Party two years later. In 1940, she was arrested by the enemy and imprisoned in Ba Ra prison, Song Be province (now Binh Phuoc province).

After being released from prison, during the August Revolution in 1945, Ms. Nguyen Thi Dinh participated in leading the uprising to seize power in Ben Tre province. In 1946, she was directly in charge of the first train carrying 12 tons of weapons from the North to support the Southwest battlefield.

From 1947-1959, Ms. Nguyen Thi Dinh held many positions in the Ben Tre Party Committee, then became Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee.

In 1960, under the leadership of the Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee, the people of Dinh Thuy, Phuoc Hiep, and Binh Khanh communes in Mo Cay district rose up to attack the enemy's posts, disband the enemy government, and gain control of the village and commune. At that time, Ms. Nguyen Thi Dinh directly led this Dong Khoi movement with the core being women. This was also the first time the "Long-haired Army" appeared in the Dong Khoi movement.

From the three communes above, the uprising spread throughout Mo Cay district and Ben Tre province, becoming the Dong Khoi movement throughout the South, the Central Highlands and some places in the Central Central region. The movement opened up a new and promising situation for the Southern revolution, contributing to creating a strategic turning point, bringing the Southern revolution from retreat, from the position of preserving forces to a strategic offensive position.

In late 1960, Ms. Nguyen Thi Dinh was appointed as Chairwoman of the National Liberation Front of Ben Tre Province. From 1965 to 1975, she was the President of the Women's Union for the Liberation of South Vietnam, then Deputy Commander of the armed forces for the liberation of South Vietnam, directly commanding many important campaigns, contributing to the great victory of the resistance war against the US to save the country.

In recognition of her great contribution, in April 1974, Ms. Nguyen Thi Dinh was promoted to the rank of Major General, becoming the first female general of the Vietnam People's Army. After the country's reunification, she continued to be assigned to many important positions in the Party and State.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dinh passed away in 1992, at the age of 72. Speaking of her, President Ho Chi Minh once said: "The Deputy Commander of the Liberation Army is Miss Nguyen Thi Dinh. In the whole world, only our country has such a general. It is truly glorious for the whole South, for our whole nation."
