Tru Son is the only clay pot making village in Nghe An, 20km southeast of Vinh city. Tru Son village, Do Luong town is often called the clay pot village where the craftsmen make 100% handmade clay pots. Until now, Tru Son craftsmen are still passionate about the clay pot making profession to preserve the traditional beauty for future generations.
To learn about this handmade clay pot village, Vietnam.vn introduces the photo series "Tru Son Clay Pot" by author Nguyen Van Truc, helping you better understand Tru Son clay pots which are made entirely by hand with only a turntable, a few small pieces of rags and thin bamboo strips to shape and smooth. To have suitable clay, villagers have to travel a long distance of 7-10 km to Nghi Van commune, Nghi Loc or all the way to Son Thanh, Yen Thanh to get it. It is so hard and miserable that the people here call it the profession of "selling bones to raise meat". The photo series was sent by the author to participate in the Photo and Video Contest "Happy Vietnam - Happy Vietnam", organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications. Although handmade, the clay pots here have been "breathed life" into each product by the artisans in a very delicate way, imbued with the essence of the past and present. Talking about the clay pot making profession, no one in the village knows the origin clearly, they only remember that from the age of 5, they started learning how to make clay pots with their parents. After being collected, the clay is carefully kneaded by the craftsmen and placed on a turntable to create the initial shape of the round, beautiful pots. Then, through skillful hands, the craftsmen smooth it out and dry it in the sun, and finally put it into the kiln to be fired.

The products of Tru Son pottery village are all handmade, requiring skill and dexterity, in which most of the product creation stages are undertaken by women in the village.

The products here come in all types and sizes, meticulously kneaded and crafted by "artisans" into shape and then fired to create beautiful and durable clay pots for consumers. The clay pot making profession here is likened to "selling bones to feed flesh", the stages of product production exude hardship and fatigue but the income is unstable.

A batch of about 250 - 300 pieces is placed in a triangular kiln built of laterite, covered with a layer of straw to retain heat. The pottery is baked with pine needles for 4 to 5 hours continuously to complete.

To have a batch of quality pottery, the most important step is firing the pottery. If the pottery is to be "cooked" evenly, the craftsman must know how to watch the fire and stop at the right time.

The perfect clay pot products have been sold in the domestic market. With the construction plan to serve sightseeing, tourism, and experience at Tru Son Clay Pot Craft Village, the People's Committee of Do Luong district will support the local government and people to build traffic, production areas, exhibition areas, and pottery and clay pot making experience areas. The plan has now been approved, striving to complete and put into service for tourism by 2025.
