Achievements of 50 years of Vietnam participating in the International Mathematical Olympiad IMO.

In 1974, the first time participating in the International Mathematical Olympiad for high school students in the German Democratic Republic, Vietnamese students caused a big surprise with excellent achievements of 1 Gold Medal, 1 Silver Medal and 2 Bronze Medals. Since then, the Vietnamese team has participated in IMO competitions 48 times, with 289 students, bringing home 69 Gold Medals, 118 Silver Medals, 84 Bronze Medals and 3 Certificates of Merit.

Over the past 50 years, Vietnamese IMO teams have had relatively stable achievements, highly appreciated by international friends not only for the number of medals but also for their outstanding achievements. Such as the absolute scores of former students Le Ba Khanh Trinh in 1979, Le Hung Viet Bao in 2003, Ngo Quy Dang in 2022...; many students won international Gold medals for two consecutive years such as: Ngo Bao Chau in 1988-1989, Vu Ngoc Minh in 2001-2002, Le Hung Viet Bao in 2003-2004, Ngo Quy Dang in 2020-2022, Pham Viet Hung in 2022-2023...

In 2007, Vietnam successfully organized the 48th IMO with the participation of 93 countries and territories. The organization created a good impression on the international community, affirming the level of Vietnamese mathematicians capable of performing highly specialized tasks.
