From July 20 to 31, the Ukrainian army lost 23,610 soldiers, according to data from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Russian forces now control less than 20% of Ukraine and have made significant advances on the eastern side of a 1,000km front since capturing the town of Avdiivka in February.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged Russia's advances and blamed this on delays in equipping the brigades and restrictions by Western allies on how to deploy weapons.

"The situation is very difficult on the entire eastern front. They are concentrating all their efforts on the east," he said, noting that Russian forces were advancing west towards the Ukrainian-controlled city of Sloviansk.

Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow was ready for talks to end the conflict, but the talks depended on Ukraine giving up four regions it annexed by Russia by 2022. Mr Zelenskyy said giving up territory was not an option.
