The international community is scrambling to find ways to prevent the risk of a full-blown conflict in the Middle East following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian Hamas movement, in the Iranian capital Tehran on July 31.

US and European Union (EU) diplomats have held emergency meetings across the Middle East, the Financial Times reported.

EU Foreign Affairs Council Deputy Secretary General Enrique Mora is said to have met with officials in Tehran on July 31, while White House National Security Council Middle East coordinator Brett McGurk is said to have met in Saudi Arabia.

The meetings were aimed at convincing Iran not to retaliate against Israel or take symbolic actions, the sources said.

Press TV channel reported that on August 1, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will preside over the funeral prayer for the political leader of Hamas.

On the Chinese side, Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Fu Tong called on relevant parties to take practical actions to promote easing tensions and restoring peace and stability in the Middle East, stating: "The situation in the Middle East is at a critical juncture, causing great concern for the international community."

Strongly opposing and condemning the assassination of leader Haniyeh, Mr. Pho Thong said it was a blatant attempt to sabotage peace efforts and deliberately trampled on the fundamental principles of the UN Charter on respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations.

According to Chinese diplomats, China is extremely concerned about the risk of increased regional volatility caused by this incident as well as disappointment over ceasefire negotiations.

Meanwhile, in Russia, on his personal Telegram channel, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev warned that a full-scale war could eventually push Middle Eastern countries towards an unstable peace.

Mr Medvedev called the innocent victims of the war in the region “hostages of a disgusting state”, referring to the United States.

“Meanwhile, it is clear to everyone that an all-out war is the only path to the fragile peace in the region,” the post said.
