Krong Pak District is considered the durian capital of Dak Lak Province. Therefore, this locality is home to many businesses that set up warehouses, factories to purchase, process, and export durian.
According to records, although it is harvest season, the buying, selling and processing of durian in this locality is quite quiet, quite different from before.
Locals said that in the past, during the durian harvest season, large-capacity tractor-trailers (containers) moved here quite a lot. There was even a time when National Highway 26, through Krong Pak district, was jammed with vehicles transporting durian.
However, currently, many warehouses, workshops, and durian purchasing facilities in Krong Pak district are also in a "closed" situation. Some facilities are open but the quantity of goods is quite modest, sometimes there is no goods at all.
In addition, many warehouses and factories are displaying signs for rent or sale. A resident of Ea Kenh commune said that renting out warehouses also brings in a large source of income. For one month of renting out a warehouse, the owner earns several tens of millions of dong. However, this year, many warehouses are sluggish and have no tenants.
Mr. Y Brung Eban, Vice Chairman of Ea Kenh Commune, said that in the area there are about 10 large warehouses and dozens of medium and small warehouses serving the durian harvest season.
There are about a dozen warehouses that are closed or have no tenants. The reason is that the recent heavy rains have made it impossible to harvest durian.
Mr. Vu Duc Con, Chairman of the Dak Lak Province Durian Association, said that the heavy rains in recent days have affected the durian harvest. Because if durian is harvested during the rain, it is easy for the fruit to become waterlogged, affecting the quality when exported. This has led to durian purchasing warehouses being very cautious in selecting their products.
"This year, there is no longer competition to buy and sell, so the market is quieter than previous years. Meanwhile, China is still consuming Vietnamese durian normally, although this market has had the participation of other countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia..." - Mr. Con added.
