In a statement, the airline confirmed the incident, saying: “Hong Kong Airlines flight HX115, departing from Hangzhou to Hong Kong on March 20, was diverted and landed safely at Fuzhou Changle International Airport due to a fire in the overhead baggage compartment. The fire was successfully extinguished.”
According to Hong Kong Airlines, all 168 people on board the plane are safe. The airline said it is assisting passengers and crew members affected by the incident.
According to Flightradar24, the plane that had the problem was an Airbus A320 that departed from Hangzhou at 12:20 p.m. and arrived in Fuzhou at 2:01 p.m. on March 20 after making an emergency diversion.
Video footage posted online shows passengers and flight attendants using water bottles to put out the fire as smoke began to fill the cabin. The video appears to have been filmed by a passenger.
Although authorities have not released the cause of the incident, social media posts from passengers on the flight said the fire likely started from a power bank.
