"Now in Gaza, our lives are like death. We are no longer alive," Maisa, 14, said in pain as she lay on her bed at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.

Maisa was injured in an Israeli artillery strike on Eilabun High School in the town of Al-Karara, east of the Gaza city of Khan Younis, on July 26, her family said.

Not only Maisa, but her nine-year-old sister Yara and her deaf 11-year-old brother Mohammed were also hit by shrapnel in their chests, stomachs and faces. Maisa's family had taken refuge in the school after being displaced several times during the 10-month Israeli offensive.

The day of the attack in the town of Al-Karara started out as normal, the family said. "We were going to school, looking pretty, playing with our friends. Suddenly, they (Israel) dropped two missiles and we became like this," said Yara, who lost sight in one eye in the attack.

The girls' mother, Ola al-Ghandour, sat next to Maisa as she cried. "I hope Maisa can regain her appearance. She is now disfigured and has lost the sight in both eyes. Yara has also lost her sight. They are both completely disfigured and have lost their beauty," she said.

In addition to the bombardment, Palestinians also face a humanitarian crisis with severe shortages of food, water, electricity and medicine in one of the most densely populated places in the world.

Mediators from Qatar, Egypt and the United States have repeatedly failed to defuse the bloodshed. The conflict continues to rage in the Middle East.

At Nasser Hospital in Gaza, nurse Makram Awad recalled the desperation of the Ghandour family when they arrived for treatment. “Two days ago, the parents of these children came and asked for help, saying that worms were coming out of their child’s head. We did what we could with the limited medical supplies we had,” said nurse Awad.

"There were no bandages, gauze or even the minimum medical supplies. The worms came out of the child's head while he was alive and injured," Awad said, calling on people to be responsible and support hospitals in Gaza so they can provide the minimum level of treatment.
