Choosing Literature materials: When will the scene of copying sample texts end?

Báo Công an Nhân dânBáo Công an Nhân dân19/11/2024

Many opinions support this policy but also admit that the most difficult thing at present is still choosing suitable materials. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training needs to soon build a data bank to ensure safety and consistency.

Along with the regulation of not using textbooks to create periodic tests for Literature, the Ministry of Education and Training's guidance also requires that assessment must be consistent with the teaching plan; and periodic testing and assessment through practice exercises and learning projects should be strengthened. Schools should strengthen the construction of question banks and test matrices according to the requirements of the subject program, preparing 9th grade students to get acquainted with the orientation of the entrance exam for grade 10, and 12th grade students to get acquainted with the orientation of the high school graduation exam.

Many opinions say that, in the context of a program, many textbooks of the new general education program in 2018 require periodic assessment tests, transfer exams, graduation exams, and exams for excellent students at all levels to use materials outside of textbooks to ensure objectivity and fairness for candidates studying different sets of books. And in fact, in the past, some high schools have directed professional teams to gradually add questions with materials outside of textbooks to the test at different rates so that students can get used to and adapt.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Hue, a teacher at Hoang Mai High School (Nghe An), said: Not using materials from textbooks to create Literature questions is a suitable policy to limit the situation of teaching and learning by "reading and copying" according to model texts. This has been implemented since the new General Education Program was applied to grade 10. At the school, regular tests always use new texts in a certain proportion. However, Ms. Hue also admitted that because this old teaching and learning habit has been rooted for quite a long time, in the beginning of implementing the test innovation, both teachers and students encountered certain difficulties and confusion. But after a period of getting used to it, students gradually adapted. This way of creating questions avoids the situation of students learning by rote or learning according to model texts. Instead, students are more proactive in receiving knowledge and improving their skills in handling and analyzing literary works based on genre characteristics. According to Ms. Hue, one of the current difficulties for teachers is how to choose non-textbook materials that are suitable for students' level and do not cause controversy. Therefore, if the Ministry of Education and Training mobilizes a team of experienced experts to build a material bank for Literature, it will be more convenient, consistent and safer.

Ms. Nguyen Mai Thoa, a Literature teacher in Vung Tau city, shared: The school has not used textbook materials to create Literature questions since 2 years ago, right from the implementation of the new General Education Program for grade 10. This is in line with the requirements of the program, in line with the program's goal of teaching and learning in the direction of developing competencies. However, Ms. Thoa also admitted that currently, Literature teachers choose materials outside of textbooks to create regular and periodic tests in a "hundred flowers bloom" style, each doing their own thing. In other words, teachers are "swimming on their own" in choosing materials, so it is difficult to avoid certain risks such as inappropriate materials, controversial materials, or materials that are too long, making it difficult for students to access and understand.

In addition to supportive opinions, on forums for teachers and parents, there are also concerns and worries about not using textbooks to create test questions and exams in Literature, which will more or less cause difficulties for students. According to some teachers, it is clear that not using textbooks for Literature tests will help eliminate sample texts and reduce rote learning, plagiarism, and copying... However, to eliminate sample texts, education management agencies and general schools must also have accompanying supportive regulations such as not relying on students' learning results to evaluate teachers; creating a habit for students to read books to further foster their love of literature; improving writing skills, without having to rely on sample texts. These things need to be thoroughly researched, implemented synchronously and have a reasonable and methodical implementation roadmap because if not done properly, students will be the ones who suffer the most.

From the parents' side, although they support the policy of gradually eliminating model texts, rote learning, and learning by rote, many opinions say that the implementation needs to be carried out simultaneously in all schools to ensure fairness. If schools innovate in testing and schools still follow the old method, students will be disadvantaged in terms of scores, affecting university admission based on transcripts. In addition, when using open materials and open test questions, teachers' grading of tests also needs to have a corresponding openness in the direction of respecting and encouraging students' own ways of thinking and feeling on the principle of not violating ethical, cultural and legal standards.
