Going back in history, at 6:30 p.m. on May 1, 1975, Long Xuyen Town was completely liberated. During that war, the Party Committee and People of Long Xuyen Town had to endure and overcome countless hardships and sacrifices to fulfill their glorious mission, contributing with the whole country to the great victory of the nation: Completing the cause of liberating the South, unifying the country, and advancing to socialism.

Looking back at the past, Long Xuyen suffered heavy consequences of war. Infrastructure was almost destroyed, people's lives faced countless difficulties. However, with a strong will and aspiration to rise up, the Party Committee, government and people of Long Xuyen united, joined hands, and embarked on the construction and development. After the complete liberation of the South, the government was established, production was developed, and life was reorganized under the new regime; focusing on promoting socio-economic development, urban construction, accelerating the urbanization process and rural development.

Many newly formed residential and urban areas, such as: Renovation and upgrading of Hai Ba Trung - Nguyen Hue square, construction of President Ton Duc Thang monument, Bong Lua monument - symbol of An Giang province; My Binh administrative area, Thoai Ngoc Hau - Binh Khanh residential area, Xeo Trom, Pho Que islet, My Quy, My Thoi, Bac Ha Hoang Ho, Golden City, Tay Song Hau... have changed the appearance of a young city towards civilized and modern development.

Economic and social development

Located in the center of An Giang province, Long Xuyen is a city with good conditions and potential for developing trade - services, industry - handicrafts, food processing. After being recognized as type III by the Prime Minister (March 1, 1999); in the period of 2000 - 2005, the city's economy achieved a high growth rate, averaging 12.5%/year. From a young city newly established in 1999, by 2005, Long Xuyen became the unit with the highest industrial production value compared to districts and towns in the country. The economic structure has shifted strongly towards increasing all three areas of trade - services (increased by 11.6%), industry - construction (increased by 17.1%) and agriculture (decreased from 8.5% to 5.9%).

In the period of 2016 - 2020, the city's economy maintained a stable growth rate, the city's economic growth averaged 10 - 12% over the past 5 years; the state budget revenue reached 6,036 billion VND (107.8%). Since 2019, the city has been assigned budget autonomy by the province. In the initial implementation, the city has achieved the provincial budget estimate, in which the balanced revenues all exceeded the annual plan. In addition, the city also has 5 wards and communes with budget autonomy, including: My Long, My Binh, My Phuoc, My Hoa and Binh Khanh.

Most recently, the first quarter of 2025 recorded positive changes in the socio-economic picture of Long Xuyen City. The economy maintained a stable development momentum, with a positive growth trend. The trade and service sector developed quite positively, with total retail sales of goods reaching 6,370 billion VND, equivalent to 19.4% of the annual plan and an increase of 13.3% over the same period last year. Industrial production maintained a stable growth rate, contributing to the overall economic development of the city.

In addition, the city's tourist, entertainment and recreation spots served nearly 30,000 visitors. Revenue from food and accommodation services reached VND2,460 billion, equivalent to 18.1% of the annual plan and a growth of 17.5% over the same period. The lives of Long Xuyen people have also made remarkable progress. Per capita income has continuously increased, the poverty rate has decreased significantly. The quality of education and health care has been improved, and people have access to better services. High-rise buildings and modern residential areas have sprung up side by side, demonstrating the prosperity and happiness of the people here.
