Sentenced to life in prison for illegally transporting more than 4kg of drugs

On August 6, the People's Court of Long An province opened the first instance trial of defendant Nguyen Truong Thanh (born in 1987, residing in Bong Trang commune, Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) for the crime of illegally transporting drugs.

According to the indictment, on the evening of January 2, Thanh borrowed his girlfriend’s car and invited her to go to the West to play. On the way, a man of unknown origin contacted Thanh by phone and asked him to transport drugs from Tan Hung district to Ho Chi Minh City for 10 million VND, but Thanh refused.

At 8 p.m. on January 3, when Thanh and his girlfriend were at a relative's house in Dong Thap province, the man of unknown origin continued to call and ask for help. At this time, Thanh agreed to transport for hire for the man.

After that, Thanh drove alone to T9 canal, Tan Hung district (Long An) as instructed by the man. At about 8:15 p.m., when he arrived at T9 canal, Thanh saw a man in front of him so he lowered the car window so that the man could put a black plastic bag into the car.

Thanh continued to receive calls from a strange phone number, instructing him to drive to Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City. However, when Thanh drove to Hung Thanh hamlet, Hung Thanh commune, Tan Hung district, the Border Guard and Tan Hung district police stopped the car for inspection, and discovered a black bag of drugs weighing more than 4kg.

At the trial, Thanh admitted his crime and asked the panel of judges to consider reducing his sentence due to his family's particularly difficult circumstances.

The People's Court of Long An province affirmed that the defendant Nguyen Truong Thanh's actions were extremely dangerous, transporting a large quantity of drugs. However, the defendant's circumstances were extremely difficult, his family had contributed to the revolution, his wife had passed away, his child was just over 1 year old, his father had a stroke and could not walk...

From there, the People's Court sentenced defendant Nguyen Truong Thanh to life in prison for illegally transporting drugs.
