Lamine Yamal attracted attention when he made a confident statement at a press conference before the first leg of the Champions League semi-final on April 29. |
“As long as I win, no one can say anything about me. Right now, they can’t say anything about me. As long as they win, then they can speak up,” Yamal said in response to a reporter’s question about his recent statements that were considered “immature.”
It all started after the Copa del Rey final on April 27, when Yamal's Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-2. In a conversation with the press, the young Spanish talent said: "Real Madrid simply cannot beat Barcelona", and "knew in advance that Real Madrid would lose even if they scored".
Yamal’s comments sparked a wave of controversy on social media. Some fans said he was too “arrogant”, while others showed their support, saying the 17-year-old’s confidence was the “spirit” of a big star.
When asked by reporters about this statement in the press conference before the match against Inter Milan, Yamal did not seem confused. The reporter's question about whether Yamal had really matured after the recent sharing did not make him waver.
Unsurprisingly, Yamal is likely to continue to be trusted by coach Hansi Flick in the match against Inter Milan. The Barcelona teenager commented that the Italian team has a very strong defense, and is good at switching from defense to attack.
Sharing about the upcoming match, Yamal affirmed that he does not feel pressure: “I do not consider this as pressure. After all, I have lived away from home and been independent for a long time. The pressure that people mention about me has long been left behind.”
The first leg of the Champions League semi-final between Barcelona and Inter Milan will take place at 2am on May 1.
