In the men's 3,000m steeplechase event of the 2024 Paris Olympics taking place in the early morning of August 8, athlete Lamecha Girma (Ethiopia) was the leading candidate for the gold medal and he also competed quite well, always being in the top group of the competition.

But when only 300m from the finish line, Lamecha Girma had an accident. After a wrong obstacle course situation, Lamecha Girma got his knee caught in the high fence, causing him to fall to the ground. The fall was so hard and in a tumbling position that the athlete could not stand up. The medical team immediately entered the field, braced Lamecha Girma's neck and carried him out on a stretcher.

Lamecha Girma's unexpected fall affected the race as other athletes had to avoid the record holder to continue running. According to information from L'Equipe, Girma was unconscious during the collision. He later regained consciousness and said a few sentences before being taken to a hospital in Paris for a health check. Currently, Lamecha Girma's condition is said to be stable.

Before the Paris Olympics started, Lamecha Girma was highly regarded for his ability to win gold medals as he held the world record with a time of 7 minutes 52 seconds 11.

The competition then continued and Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali won the gold medal with a time of 8:06.05.
