According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang, the unusual weather and unseasonal rains have affected agricultural production, including shrimp farming, due to changes in environmental factors. The disease situation has become complicated and unpredictable. In addition to common diseases such as white spot, acute hepatopancreatic necrosis, and diseases caused by environmental factors, a new disease has been recorded in the province, which is glass disease in newly stocked shrimp larvae.
In February, the provincial fisheries sector recorded 4.6 hectares of shrimp damaged by white spot disease at a shrimp farming household in An Bien district and provided chlorine disinfectant to control the spread of the disease.
Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang, Le Huu Toan, said that the province is focusing on deploying and implementing the plan to prevent and control aquatic diseases in 2025, strengthening recommendations and guiding farmers to apply technical solutions to minimize the adverse impacts of climate change on aquatic production activities.
Along with that, the functional sector monitors and grasps the situation and developments of weather, meteorology and hydrology in the area, strengthens environmental monitoring and warnings in aquaculture areas, promptly notifies sectors, localities and people of adverse developments of weather, environment and disease risks to proactively respond and protect production safety; at the same time, when detecting an epidemic in the area, focus on solutions to quickly extinguish the outbreak, not allowing it to spread.
Accordingly, the provincial fisheries sector coordinates with localities in key production areas to strengthen propaganda and guide shrimp farmers to release shrimp in the right season to limit the outbreak of harmful diseases, ensure productivity and quality; remind farmers to regularly monitor recommendations from aquaculture management agencies, especially in shrimp farming, on weather developments, disease risks, and choose to buy quality shrimp from reputable establishments with clear origins for release... to produce safely and achieve economic efficiency.
In addition, the functional sector strengthens the inspection of establishments on the conditions of production, trading of breeds, feed and products for environmental improvement and treatment in aquaculture, promptly detects and strictly handles violations. On the other hand, the functional sectors strengthen the inspection of imported breeds and those circulating in the market, in order to prevent the situation of poor quality shrimp breeds, affecting the production efficiency of brackish water shrimp farming in 2025.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang, in 2025, the province plans to stock 137,050 hectares of brackish water shrimp farming, with a total output target of 155,000 tons of shrimp. Up to now, the stocking area is more than 95,165 hectares, reaching 69.4% of the plan, including: Industrial shrimp farming, extensive - improved extensive farming, shrimp - rice; shrimp output is more than 9,900 tons, equal to 6.4% of the plan.
The province continues to convert ineffective rice growing areas to shrimp-rice models in areas with favorable conditions to increase added value and respond safely and effectively to climate change, focusing on districts in U Minh Thuong, Go Quao, Hon Dat, Kien Luong, Giang Thanh...
At the same time, the fisheries sector cooperates with localities to develop models such as: shrimp - rice, green-legged shrimp farming intercropped with black tiger shrimp and shrimp - crab combined to meet VietGAP and organic standards... In particular, the province increases the area, productivity and output of green-legged shrimp in the combined farming model; promotes the expansion of the 2-3-phase industrial shrimp farming model, transfers and applies scientific and technological advances to shrimp farming; strengthens agricultural extension activities, supports businesses and farmers to apply scientific and technological advances to the production, processing, preservation and consumption of farmed shrimp.
In addition, the fisheries sector organizes training for production facilities and shrimp farmers in the direction of VietGAP, organic ecology and food safety; guides farmers to build shrimp farming models applying standards according to the requirements of domestic and international markets, in order to increase the value of products; encourages the development of chain linkages from seed production, feed, commercial farming and product consumption for black tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp; guides the implementation of granting identification codes for brackish water shrimp farming to farmers...
