Launching green credit assessment project in Ca Mau

The project to assess the feasibility of designing a proposal to mobilize a Green Carbon Credit project in Ca Mau province in 2024-2025 was launched on March 12. The project is chaired by the Ca Mau Provincial Union of Friendship Organizations and funded by the Save the Children Japan Organization (through Save the Children International - Representative Office in Vietnam).

The project aims to assess the feasibility of jointly designing documents to mobilize green carbon credits in coastal communities in Ca Mau province. Thereby, conducting consultation activities with stakeholders, jointly designing the project, reaching consensus on restoring and protecting at least 1,500 hectares of mangrove forests; the project design is built on international carbon standards. The project implementation period is from the date of project approval (February 20) to September 2025. The total project capital is over 1.7 billion VND.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Dong Khoi, Chairman of the Union of Friendship Organizations of Ca Mau province , said that the province has about 92,460 hectares of forest; of which 11,000 hectares are natural forests. Forests in Ca Mau are very diverse, including mangrove forests (concentrated along the coast), alum forests (U Minh Ha) and forests on the Hon Khoai and Hon Chuoi island clusters.

Mr. Nguyen Dong Khoi said that the project launch aims to provide scientific, authentic, convincing information, in line with the mechanism and policies towards Netzero by 2050; meeting the practical needs of coastal communities. The purpose is to reduce the risk of forest degradation, increase the area of ​​​​forest planting, contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating climate change, and improving the livelihoods of the community.

At the event, Save the Children shared its expertise and skills in coordinating the implementation of project activities in communes in Nam Can district. Delegates, agencies, units and localities discussed and contributed opinions on issues arising in local practice; the benefits and opportunities that people have when implementing this project as well as the impact of the project on the environment; the specific responsibilities of local authorities and people in coordinating the implementation of the project, etc.
