To develop the Mekong Delta's economy and society quickly and sustainably, one of the solutions implemented is to strengthen research and application, bringing science and technology closely linked with production and business activities, especially in the region's strong industries.

Linked to regional development practices
The Mekong Delta is the country’s largest producer and exporter of food, seafood, and tropical fruits. It also has natural conditions that are very favorable for the development of many other economic sectors, such as tourism, renewable energy, etc.
According to the Department of Technology Application and Technical Advancement (Ministry of Science and Technology), after more than 3 years of implementing the Resolution of the 13th Party Congress, 2 years of implementing Resolution No. 13-NQ/TW of the Politburo on the direction of socio-economic development and ensuring national defense and security in the Mekong Delta region to 2030, with a vision to 2045, the socio-economic development of the provinces and cities in the region has seen good growth, with some areas developing well. In particular, the field of science, technology and innovation has achieved many results, linked to production practices, clearly demonstrating its role as an important driving force for development. Science and technology activities in the Mekong Delta region contribute about 30% of the added value in agricultural production, 38% of the added value in the production of plant and animal varieties, contributing to bringing Vietnam into the group of the world's leading rice exporting countries.
Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat assessed that localities have promoted the application of scientific and technological advances in developing many key industries, such as: high-quality rice production, development of specialized areas for high-value fruit trees, successful construction of intensive and super-intensive farming areas for white-leg shrimp and pangasius in chains. Thereby, creating added value for products, enhancing the competitiveness of key products, key advantages of localities, serving domestic consumption and export.
A representative of the Department of Science and Technology of Tra Vinh province said that, in order to contribute to enhancing the economic value chain of coconut trees, especially the specialty of wax coconut, the province has implemented a project to build a model of growing wax coconut using embryo cultured seedlings. In particular, receiving technological processes for propagating and growing wax coconut using embryo culture technology, performing embryo culture and domestication at the nursery, building a 6-hectare model of growing wax coconut using embryo culture in Cau Ke district, the survival rate of trees reaching 99.8%. At the same time, Tra Vinh also implemented the project of designing and manufacturing equipment to determine the wax ratio in coconuts, contributing to classifying coconuts, facilitating the post-harvest coconut processing stage.
Regarding Dong Thap province, according to Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology Nguyen Thanh Tai, the province's key agricultural products are rice, flowers - ornamental plants, lotus, mango, and tra fish. To increase the value of the products, many research activities and applications of science and technology in production and processing have been and are being implemented. These include: researching the process of manufacturing materials that meet standards for producing fruit bags for mango cultivation for export; researching and proposing solutions to build and perfect a new model of agricultural cooperatives operating effectively in the area; researching the production of raw materials and growing media for ornamental flowers on an industrial scale for Sa Dec flower village...
Also mentioning research and application activities associated with production practices, supporting the development of key local industries to achieve higher values, Mr. Lam Van Tan, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Ben Tre said that the Department continues to advise on innovation in the management of scientific and technological research activities from the stage of proposing and ordering tasks to selecting, appraising, approving, checking and accepting; at the same time, promoting the transfer and replication of research results into production and life. Functional units carry out diverse forms of information and propaganda of research and application results to bring information quickly and promptly to the grassroots, businesses and people, creating a more positive spread of the application effectiveness of scientific and technological tasks after being handed over for application, contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality and the Mekong Delta region.
