During the days of April, the whole country is jubilantly preparing for the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025). Activities, programs, and works related to this topic always receive much attention from the audience.

In the film industry alone, after the phenomenon of "Peach, Pho and Piano" by director Phi Tien Son in 2024, this year, the film "Tunnel: Sun in the Dark" by director Bui Thac Chuyen is creating an "earthquake" at the domestic box office when for the first time a war film surpassed the hundred billion mark in revenue.

With the public's attention, support, and national pride on the occasion of April 30 - May 1, "Tunnel" will reach its target of 150 billion this week and will stay in theaters for a long time. After "Tunnel", "Flip Side 8: Vong Tay Nang" by Ly Hai is the next work to receive attention when it has a scene recreating wartime bombs.

During the film's promotion last weekend, the director said that he invested heavily in the filming, although the scene of the explosion in the coconut forest only appeared for a short time, it featured the image of a family of three and villagers running through bombs and bullets.

Watching the film trailer, one can see Ly Hai's efforts in recreating the brutality of war with broken coconut trees, houses that are no longer intact, and bombs falling continuously as if wanting to burn everything down. In the midst of the fire of war, life is fragile, so personal dreams and passions seem to become small in the face of the times.

To find the filming location, Ly Hai and his crew traveled to many places. It was not simply a matter of choosing a coconut forest area to set the scene, for him, it also had to be a realistic scene from that location. Initially, the crew found several areas with coconut forests in the Central region, but none of them were feasible, because the locations were either not allowed to film, or did not have revolutionary historical significance.

After much searching, the chosen location was Thien Nghiep commune, Ham Tien ward, Binh Thuan province. This is also a place that witnessed many fierce battles between our army and the enemy during the period of independence struggle. “Right here, there were battles and bombings just like the scene in the movie. There are many coconut trees here with traces of old bombs and bullets” - said producer Minh Ha.

According to Ly Hai, to make this scene, he used 5 cameras, including 3 large cameras and 2 drones. However, during the detonation, an aerial camera was burned.

In addition to the scene of people fleeing falling bombs, filmed with many angles to bring a panoramic picture of life and the desire to live amidst falling bombs and bullets, the producer also revealed scenes of a field hospital lacking supplies, and doctors and nurses tensely fighting for people's lives amid enemy airstrikes.

Ly Hai’s investment in a short scene shows the filmmaker’s dedication, along with his dedication to recreating the “Vietnamese” quality on screen. For him, cinema is not only purely for entertainment but also a place to spread national identity, a way for Vietnamese culture to be told, preserved and touched the hearts of the audience.

“Flip Side 8: Vong Tay Nang” was written and directed by Ly Hai. Tickets for the film will be available from April 18 and will have special screenings on April 27, 28 and 29 before officially opening in theaters from April 30.
