On December 28, 2022, the restoration of the Japanese Covered Bridge began, with a total cost of 20.2 billion VND, of which 50% came from the Quang Nam provincial budget and 50% from the Hoi An city budget. The Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation was assigned to take charge of the project.
After 19 months of construction, the project to restore the Chua Cau relic was assessed by Vietnamese and Japanese experts to have been carried out quite methodically and completely, especially in the stages of preparing documents, materials, consulting experts, researchers, and organizing document appraisal... From the beginning, Japanese experts participated in surveying and evaluating the current status, techniques, original traces, and restoration records of the Chua Cau relic. The project went through the approval process of many specialized management agencies to unify viewpoints and ensure restoration solutions.

According to the Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Preservation, the project to restore the Japanese Covered Bridge relic has been completed and has achieved certain results. Firstly, the architectural shape and structure of the Japanese Covered Bridge, from the whole to the details, have been preserved almost intact. Secondly, the Japanese Covered Bridge, after restoration, has preserved its original values to the maximum. Thirdly, the Japanese Covered Bridge relic has overcome defects, significantly strengthened its solidity, ensuring stability and sustainability. Fourthly, in addition to preserving and maintaining the value of the relic, the project has also synchronously invested in upgrading the landscape infrastructure and surrounding environment.
Recently, there have been different opinions about the restored Japanese Covered Bridge. Some people praise it for being beautiful and reasonable, but others say that the paint color of the restored Japanese Covered Bridge is not true to the original.

Mr. Nguyen Su, former Secretary of the Hoi An City Party Committee, Quang Nam Province, said that it is normal for people to have opinions of praise or criticism and it is a very encouraging sign: “I am very happy with the attention of people and public opinion towards the Chua Cau relic. If we do it but no one cares, that is a worrying thing. In my personal opinion, after the restoration, if we want to evaluate the quality of the Chua Cau relic, we will have to wait more time, but the appearance of the Chua Cau will not change. The original elements and authenticity are guaranteed. I think this is the success of this major restoration of the Chua Cau relic”.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee, said that the Japanese Covered Bridge is a symbolic relic of Hoi An Cultural Heritage and a profound testament to the presence and cultural exchange process of Japan in Hoi An.

“The Japanese Cultural Affairs Agency has sent experts to support and assist Hoi An city in the early stages of the project to restore the Japanese Covered Bridge. From the research and construction of restoration documents to the supervision of the restoration, the restoration has been guaranteed to be accurate from the beginning,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Son.

During the preparation and implementation of the project to restore the Japanese Covered Bridge relic, the Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation has collected, compiled and collaborated with Da Nang Publishing House to publish the publication "Japanese Covered Bridge" in December 2021 and the publication "Japanese Covered Bridge Relic Restoration" in August 2024. These two publications help readers have a thorough view and better understand the value of the relic and the process of restoring the Japanese Covered Bridge relic.
