Iran has asserted that it has the legal right to retaliate against its enemies for the assassination of Hamas leader Isnail Haniyeh on its soil.
Mehrnews news agency reported that on August 1, Iran's acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani had a phone call with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to discuss bilateral relations and the latest developments related to the death of Hamas leader Haniyeh.
During the phone call, Iran's top diplomat said that the assassination of Mr. Haniyeu was "a blatant violation of Iran's territorial integrity and national security," and praised the Hamas leader as "a prominent figure in the Muslim world and a tireless fighter in the Palestinian resistance."
According to Mr. Kani, this assassination is against international law as well as the principles of the United Nations Charter, and Iran has the legal right to respond to such a cruel act decisively and proportionately.
Iran's acting foreign minister also requested the United Nations Security Council and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to hold urgent meetings to investigate the assassination of Mr. Haniyeh, including the violation of Iran's national security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
For his part, the Turkish Foreign Minister condemned the assassination of the Hamas leader as a blatant violation of Iran's red lines and territorial integrity, and affirmed that Ankara will do its utmost to support Tehran's legitimate initiative.
Meanwhile, in Israel, Sputnik news agency quoted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as affirming that his country is waging a war against the "Iranian axis of evil" and therefore, he will not listen to calls from the international community to end the conflict in Gaza.
Warning his people of "difficult days" ahead, Netanyahu declared: "We are ready for every scenario, we will be united and resolute in the face of any threat."
The Israeli prime minister also warned that Iran "will pay a very heavy price for any aggression from any direction".
Faced with the risk of conflict spreading more widely in the Middle East than ever before, on the same day, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on “all parties” involved to end “escalatory actions” and reach a ceasefire in Gaza.
Speaking to reporters while visiting Mongolia, Mr. Blinken said that achieving peace “starts with a ceasefire, and to successfully achieve that goal, it first requires all parties to negotiate to stop taking any escalatory actions.”
