Rizki Juniansyah won the men's 73kg weightlifting event after successfully lifting a total of 354kg, including 155kg in the snatch and 199kg in the clean and jerk. The latter lifted 199kg, setting a new Olympic record. The 21-year-old Indonesian weightlifter successfully climbed to the top of the podium at the 2024 Olympics and the Indonesian national anthem was played once again in Paris after climber Veddriq Leonardo won the first gold medal on August 8.

Rizki burst into tears after successfully lifting 199 kg in the clean and jerk, with thousands of spectators expressing their gratitude for his performance. Rizki then hugged coaches and officials on the sidelines who were also crying with emotion.

"At first I was very nervous. But then I was able to make Olympic weightlifting history. I hope this gold medal will be a driving force for Indonesian weightlifting to develop further," Rizki said after winning the gold medal, and he wants to defend this achievement at the 2028 Olympics in the US.

Rizki Juniansyah sets Olympic record

With Rizki's achievement, Indonesia has risen from 46th to 28th place in the 2024 Olympic medal tally (as of the morning of August 9) with 2 gold medals and 1 bronze medal. Indonesia also surpassed Thailand to rank 2nd among Southeast Asian countries in Paris.

The top position in Southeast Asia in terms of achievements at this year's Olympics still belongs to the Philippines, which is ranked 27th in the medal table with 2 gold medals and 2 bronze medals. Thailand is ranked 3rd with 1 gold medal, 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals, followed by Malaysia with 2 bronze medals. Meanwhile, Vietnamese sports have another empty-handed Olympics, after the last event failed to win any medals in Tokyo in 2020.
