Iron ore futures fell for a second straight session, as weak demand amid steel output cuts in top consumer China offset support from some loss-making activity.
The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) DCIOcv1 fell 0.41% to 731.5 yuan ($101.88) a tonne, after rising more than 1% earlier in the session.
Benchmark September iron ore SZZFU4 on the Singapore Exchange fell 0.25 percent to $98.75 a tonne, after hitting a high of $101.5 earlier in the session.
As of Monday, 79 steelmakers had launched equipment maintenance, up from 41 at the end of July, as profits fell, analysts at consultancy Mysteel said in a note.
Coking coal DJMcv1 and coking coal DCJcv1, other steelmaking ingredients on the DCE, fell 3.19% and 3.13%, respectively.
Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange continued to decline. Rebar SRBcv1 fell 1.73%, hot-rolled coil SHHCcv1 fell 1.62%, rebar SWRcv1 fell 0.59%, and stainless steel SHSScv1 fell 0.62%.
“The steel market remains under pressure from the transition to new rebar standards, overseas anti-dumping investigations as well as signs of weakness in the manufacturing sector and export markets,” analysts at Galaxy Futures said in a note.
