According to records, in many areas in Ben Tre province, traders are purchasing dried coconuts at prices ranging from 100,000 - 110,000 VND/dozen (12 fruits).
In particular, traders buy coconuts at the highest price in the province in Giong Trom and Mo Cay Nam districts because of better quality. In other areas, coconut prices are lower by 10,000 - 20,000 VND/dozen.
Mr. Huynh Van Hiep (52 years old, living in Giong Trom district, Ben Tre province) excitedly said that his family had just sold nearly a thousand dry coconuts (about 1,200 fruits) for 100,000 VND (not including harvesting costs).
"This is the highest price in the past 3 years. Thanks to the high price, I also boldly bought more fertilizer and pesticides to reinvest in my family's coconut garden of more than 6,000 square meters ," said Mr. Hiep.
According to many gardeners in Ben Tre, in the past 3 years, the price of dried coconut has never exceeded 100,000 VND/dozen like the current price.
Like Mr. Hiep's family, many gardeners in Ben Tre, after selling coconuts, boldly spent money to hire workers to add mud to their coconut gardens.
Although the price of dried coconut is quite high, gardeners in Ben Tre do not have many coconuts left to sell.
Explaining the reason for the recent high price of dry coconuts, Mr. Nguyen Van Cong (residing in Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre province) said that due to the impact of the recent drought and salinity, coconut yields were low and the fruit was of poor quality.
Besides, currently factories processing coconut products are also increasing their capacity, causing the price of dried coconut to increase accordingly.
Mr. Huynh Quang Duc - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ben Tre province, said that the province's agricultural sector is currently focusing on supporting businesses to register for the implementation of growing area codes, so that when the official letter of agreement is signed to export coconuts to the Chinese market, Ben Tre will have enough conditions to meet the needs of businesses and then the price of coconuts will be more stable.
The whole province has more than 78,000 hectares of coconut, mainly raw dry coconut.
