Processed foods – the trend of modern life

At the recent seminar "Healthy Nutrition - Understanding Processed Foods", talking to reporters, Dr. Bui Thi Mai Huong, National Institute of Nutrition, said that nowadays, people are increasingly aiming for delicious, clean, and healthy food.

However, Vietnamese people have many eating habits that affect their health. Specifically, eating too much salt, sugar, and fat.

“Eating too much salt can easily lead to high blood pressure, kidney disease and can lead to risks such as stomach cancer, osteoporosis, asthma... Eating too much sugar causes weight gain, increases cardiovascular disease, increases the risk of diabetes, increases the risk of fatty liver and kidney disease, increases skin aging...

Eating too much fat causes obesity, increases atherosclerosis, harms the heart and brain, causes diabetes and a number of other chronic diseases...", Dr. Huong shared.

Especially nowadays, busy people increasingly prefer to choose processed foods. This is a food source suitable for the lifestyle of modern society.

These foods help people have a quick, convenient, delicious, and nutritious meal. The processing also helps to improve nutritional value, convenience, and safety for users.

Consumers are increasingly prioritizing the choice of processed foods with healthy nutritional ingredients, suitable for themselves and their families.

Consumers are increasingly concerned about the quality and safety of processed foods, especially in the context of urbanization and rising personal incomes. In addition, there are concerns about the content of preservatives and food additives. Several “food safety incidents” have also raised concerns in the community.

However, "as long as consumers update information and have the skills to choose products from reputable manufacturers, they will certainly choose foods that are safe for health, delicious, and full of nutrients," Dr. Huong emphasized.

Dr. Huong recommends that smart consumers when choosing processed foods should pay attention to: Limit ultra-processed and highly processed foods (foods containing many preservatives to extend shelf life or make the final product more delicious or attractive);

Consumers also need to choose foods that reduce sugar and salt by carefully reading the product labels and ingredients to decide how much sugar, salt, etc. to consume per day. At the same time, increase the combination of foods with fiber, raw foods, and minimal processing in the menu.
